About Me

to see how the world lives

my full travel biography (so you'll know which advices to solicit):
i grew up in alaska but left the state in 2005, then traveled around the US followed by a brief stint in brooklyn, then worked and went to university in portland (oregon) for a few years before going to poitiers (france) in september 2008. after a year in poitiers, i traveled europe while WWOOFing on farms in central europe, italy and greece, then spent some time in dakar (senegal) from january - august 2010. from october 2010 to june 2011 i was back in france working as in english teaching assistant at a high school in avesnes-sur-helpe and traveled in belgium and the netherlands. during the summer of 2011 i spent six weeks in working in spain and six weeks working in morocco, then went back to portland to finish my education, then back in spain to work during the summer of 2012. now i am back in alaska going to university once again, working on various projects, and preparing for a trip to latin america - hopefully the dominican republic!

personally, i guess i'm an odd sort of lass, voire hippie baroudeuse, sensible & sensible, très independante, cartésienne, and a "social introvert" who enjoys meeting new people and experiencing new things. i'm a planner and strategist by nature who loves making things happen and always has a pet project in the works.

if you're a guy, PLEASE READ (but don't let it frighten you away):
when i'm traveling, i sometimes get e-mails and invitations which really sound like date requests from guys whose profiles are either empty or only have comments from girls, and this puts me in an awkward position. i have also met up with people in neutral, platonic contexts and had it turn into an awkward date without my knowledge or intent, and i've stayed at people's houses who later tried some things i was not comfortable with. perhaps this happens sometimes by accident or misunderstanding, but there are guys out there for whom it's their sole intent for using CS. don't believe me? see here: http://www.rooshvforum.com/thread-3324.html
look, lads - i'm totally fine to meet up with any of you gentlemen out there (i do believe that most of you are gentlemen), however just as a reminder: couchsurfing was NOT created for dating! there are plenty of other websites out there for dating if that's what you're looking for. but if this isn't the case, then we're good, and thank you for understanding! it's not easy to travel along as a single female.
this said, the vast majority of my couchsurfing hosts (who have been mostly male) have been WONDERFUL, and for this i am very appreciative. ^^

i have many personal philosophies, but the thing is...they're personal. ^^ among my influences: "youth is the time to go flashing from one end of the world to the other, to try the manners of different nations, to hear the chimes at midnight, to see the sunrise in town and country, to be converted at a revival, to circumnavigate the metaphysics, write halting verses, run a mile to see a fire, and wait all day long in the theatre to applaud hernani."- robert louis stevenson"who cares what they think?"- my childhood best friend (when i didn't want to go play alien detectives near where the cool kids were playing 4-square because i was embarrassed)

learning languages, the social sciences in general, reading (i dig theory), baking, pretty scenery, live music, latin dance, random acts of kindness, and une bonne bouteille every now & again...

Music, Movies & Books

YES, PLEASE! as for movies, i like old films, musicals, cult classics & anything with an interesting, eccentric theme and a strong dose of imagination. nothing too brainless or too violent.
as for music, i like a little bit of everything but not just anything. i love live music especially, i like going to concerts and dancing around and falling into people. i like a lot of old stuff. in oregon where i go to school (university) i was a volunteer DJ for the student radio station where i did a "world" show and now i do the same at the anchorage student station. i also love to dance salsa and bachata and dig all latin rhythms.
i do love to read, but unfortunately all my books are in storage boxes in someone's basement. my favorite tales involve loads of idealism, romanticism, adventure, and faraway places. as for non-ficition, i gravitate towards almost anything in the humanities area, philosophy and religion.

Teach, Learn, Share

i make a really great loaf of bread from scratch and would love to teach you how. also i'm working on my card tricks and would love to learn any you might know.
