About Me

Dear Travellers,

Welcome to my home, Casa Lorraine — a cosy three-bedroom, three-bathroom waterfront retreat designed for rest, comfort, and connection. Nestled in Cape Town’s relaxed southern suburbs, Casa Lorraine sits perfectly between the vibrant city centre and the wild beauty of the Cape of Good Hope.

The house is named and blessed in honour of my grandmother, Lorraine. Her family were French peasants who left Europe for the New World in search of a fresh beginning — a spirit of renewal and possibility that I carried with me when I, too, began a new chapter of my life by moving to South Africa.

Whether you’re unwinding after an African safari or simply looking for a calm, friendly place to slow down and share stories, I hope you’ll find the atmosphere easy and welcoming. Please make yourself at home, settle in, and enjoy your stay at Casa Lorraine.

I’m glad to share this place with you,
Patrick

About Me:

I’m 43 and I was born and raised in a small town in Texas, but these days I split my life between my two homes in London and Cape Town. After retiring at 40, I’ve had the freedom to spend more time on the things I love — travelling, learning new things, and volunteering with local Malawian and Zimbabwean communities here in South Africa.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

When I was in my twenties and early thirties, I loved hosting travellers through Couchsurfing. I never actually surfed myself, but I had a great time welcoming guests from all over the world — and I’m still in touch with many of them today.

Now in my 40s, I’m opening my home once again. The good news? No more sleeping on the sofa! These days, guests get their own private room with an en-suite bathroom in a proper house (grown-up perks of getting older).

I’m happy to offer you a comfortable place to stay, but I won’t be able to do airport pickups, driving, or guiding around. Luckily, Uber is cheap and reliable here, and public transport works too. You’ll have the freedom to explore Cape Town your way, and I’ll be around as a welcoming host — maybe even for a shared dinner every now and then.

Music, Movies, and Books

I love rock and jazz. At the moment, I often listen to Melanie De Biasio:

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I’ve never climbed a mountain or won a race, but I believe small actions can be just as meaningful. One of the things I’m proud of is convincing a friend — who had no interest in Africa at all — to join me on safari in Kenya and Tanzania.

The trip completely changed his perspective - I'd say it even changed his life! Since then, he and his wife have visited me in South Africa, fallen in love with Cape Town, and are now in the process of buying their very own home here. We may even end up as neighbours on the same street! For me, helping someone discover a love for this continent they might never have experienced otherwise feels like a small but amazing achievement.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I love hosting Couchsurfing travellers, even though I’ve never actually surfed myself — I’m more of a hotel guy when I travel. So I can’t really say what "I can share with hosts,” but what I do offer is a comfortable home and a friendly welcome to travellers to Africa.
