▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄ CURRENT MISSION ▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄

To discover what it's like to live in all of the places I visit, and to seize every opportunity to establish life-long friendships with generous people everywhere.

▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄ INTRO ▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄

This profile once included many photos and interesting links to the items mentioned in it. These links, photos, graphics and other features no longer work on this new disfunctional CS website. I'm working to restore them, but the new corporate CS has made that as difficult as possible.

I know that the foundation and the very core purpose of Couchsurfing is to host and assist travelers. With the support of other veteran Couchsurfers, I am currently developing a new hospitality-exchange website at dedicated to maintaining this foundation and 'core purpose', restoring essential original CS ideals of generosity and service, and developing user support functions that work. GuestPlaces is not for all CSers. Membership is completely free but requires a degree of committment to what we do.

▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄ ABOUT ME ▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄

I am a sometimes retired american filmmaker who enjoys traveling to France and to all of the warm, sunny places that I love. I live in Paris for three months every summer. You are welcome to contact me any time.

I have Surfed and Hosted many, many times and made good friends around the world. When I'm in the States, I often stay in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, or travel to other places, while always looking forward to my return to France. I am always a Host whenever and wherever I have my own place.

I prefer not to use Facebook for any CouchSurfing activity. I'm dismayed to see so much CSing that requires it. The current set of social websites serve only the purposes of capitalist greed and corporate/government abuse. I'm concerned about privacy, especially now that CS is a data-mining corporation directly affiliated with Facebook, and I'm cautious about the way we all voluntarily surrender our civil rights when we participate in these internet atrocities. I am quite amazed and distressed to see that so many people do not seem to care about their privacy and integrity.

I'm an American of french and slovenian ancestry. [Click here for the listing of my paternal line:].

I love to be in Paris in the summer, and it has become my new "home town". My dream is to settle down forever in a small french or italian village with the woman of my dreams and establish a small auberge where we shall have a café, a place to always welcome traveling Couchsurfers, and a lovely garden where we will grow tomatoes, herbs, and flowers.

I'm not gay. I wish people, especially women, would stop assuming so just because I enjoy many things considered 'un-masculine' by stereotypical American men.

I stay in France as much as possible, but not having a good excuse for a permanent visa, I must submit to our insensitive politicians' inhumane laws that push us around by force every three months. (I detest politicians.)

Perhaps you will enjoy watching some of my cooking show videos: Click here to cook with me.

If you like food and cooking in Paris, join me at the Sunday Morning Market.

I spent most of my life in the Hollywood cinema business producing and directing with a little bit of acting, too. I was once the Film Archivist at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and worked on the Oscars show many times editing the film clips. I was on the original staff of the Los Angeles International Film Exposition, and I have met filmmakers from around the world. Los Angeles in now part of my past and I may never return.

~~~~ J'ai passé la plupart de ma vie dans l'image des entreprises productrices d'Hollywood et de la direction. J'ai été une fois le film Archivist à l'Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, et a travaillé sur le spectacle Oscar plusiers fois l'édition du film clips. J'étais sur le personnel de la Los Angeles International Film Exposition, et j'ai rencontré des cinéastes du monde entier.
Here is my Tribe Hollywood profile.
I have a small role in Olivier Assayas' film, "Après Mai". Shooting was several summers ago in Paris.
In this photo taken in the Carolwood Room at Walt Disney World, I am standing next to a special display that I installed myself, of Walt Disney's backyard train, Lilly Belle:
My family name, Recor is an american mis-spelling of Ricard that first appeared in the United States census of 1880. Mon arrière, arrière, ....arrière grand-père, M. Fulerland Ricard est né en 1600 (peut-être un copin d'Artagnan?) à Pézenas, Hérault, Languedoc. (,+France/@43.461766,3.423271,13z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x12b14028bb727833:0x7af0f271d51ac9bb?hl=en) En 1653 son fils, Antoine est arrivé à Québec de France avec la famille; son épouse, Doudeux Barboize et son fils de 4 ans, Jean Richard Ricard. Bien sûr, personne ne s'entendait avec l'Angleterre dans les jours, et après 1776, ma famille a déménagé dans le sud du frontière de l'État de New York. Mon père est né en Plattsburgh plusieurs générations plus tard.I visited Pézenas for the first time in 2012, CouchSurfing with my dear friend Isabelle Dosmond.
In Paris, I am the creator of "le Paris Picnic du Jour" ~ Une Tradition Parisienne depuis 2009. When you visit Paris, meet me there
Check it out:
2015 is the 7th summer of the Picnic du Jour in Paris. COME TO THE PICNIC du JOUR! The first Picnic du Jour this year was on Friday 19 June.
Those of you "etrangers" who want to learn the words to 'la Marseillaise' before you have to sing it, can do so on my website at this link:
And while you are at it, have some fun here,
I spend winters in North Carolina where some of my CouchSurfing friends from Paris and around the world visited me in my little village of Carrboro, "The Paris of the Piedmont". I host a weekly CS fine food event every Friday -- an evening of cooking and learning known as "French Cooking in Carrboro". I also make more CouchSurfer friends at Chapel Hill/Carrboro "Un-Potluck" Wednesdays.
I have learned that service to others is the highest form of relationship. I also know that all things happen in just the perfect way, and that when I do not resist my experiences of life, and "go with the flow", that everything works out very well, and the quality of my own life continuously improves.
J'ai appris que le service aux autres est l'activité la plus importante pour moi. Je sais aussi que toutes les choses exactement de la façon parfaite, et que lorsque je n'ai pas résister à mes expériences de vie, et de "suivre le mouvement», que tout fonctionne très bien, et la qualité de ma propre vie s'améliore continuellement.
I am not gay. I do not want to be approached by men on this website.
I am honored by your interest in adding me to your CS friends, but I want you to know that I do not just "collect" friends for numbers on my CS profile (or on Facebook). I do not want to have you only as one more on my list. Every one of my profile friends is a good personal one, someone I know, one of my own Hosts or Surfers, that I have met in person and who will always be welcome to Surf with me, and with whom I will be equally welcome to stay when I am traveling in their city.
I want your Friend Request to be equally as personal as my friendship. I'm NOT asking for a reference. (They are NOT what I want.) Just a friendly PM to accompany your request that lets me know I'm not just another number on your Friends List.
Please drop me a short message to say, "Ciao!", that I am welcome to surf at your place, and something-something-something. Then I will, of course, accept you as much more valuable to me than simply "Number 237".
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
After organizing and hosting in Los Angeles, I left there in April 2009. I am now traveling in France and around Europe for extended periods of time, seeking a couch for myself wherever I go, organizing events and participating in many CS activities. My home base is usually Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
~~~ J'ai pris ma retraite de l'industrie cinématographique et a quitté Los Angeles en avril 2009. Je suis maintenant un voyage en France et en Europe pour une période de temps.

Let's get off on the right foot. I despise the new corporate Couchsurfing for it's complete disregard of stalkers and sexual predators on the system, and this 'marginally effective' website. I wonder what incompetent and disconnected americans it must take to create a website like this one! I'm quite disappointed with those responsible for the ruin of the magnificent original Couchsurfing concept and system that served the community for so long.

I am also on BeWelcome, TrustRoots, and You can ask me for a couch on those sites.

I also contribute the CS Paris Support Web Page at enEurope ( to the Paris CS community.

I was on the Org Team of Paris Rendez-vous 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2024 and 2015.

I organize at least 5 events during Paris Rendez-Vous, including a Day Trip to Claude Monet's Home and Gardens in Giverny.

Past Paris Rendez-Vous Programs:
Paris Rendez-Vous 2012
Paris Rendez-Vous 2011
(Sorry, these are links that no longer work on the CS website.)

Every summer we celebrate the
Anniversary "PICNIC du JOUR" PICNIC. 2017 will be the 9th summer of the Picnic du Jour.

I was organizer of two trips to Versailles including Les Grands Eaux Nocturnes, a day of theatre in the park, and I am the creator of the Paris 'Picnic du Jour'.

During the winter in Chapel Hill, North Carolina I host many wonderful CSers passing through that "neck of the woods" before I return to Paris (every year in summer). Many joined me in my Carrboro home for my CS cooking event, "Cuisine Français à Carrboro", or at the weekly Potluck dinner.
I hosted the Triangle Potluck twice.

I especially encourage my dear friends from Paris, and all of my friends from around the world that I met in Paris, to visit me in the States — my favorite place in the USA is North Carolina and I often spend winters there.

In 2009, I organized Christmas Dinner in Paris

I am on FaceBook of course, but I do not like to use it, especially for CouchSurfing. (You really have no idea how offensive the use of Facebook is by the US government) So please don't use it for CouchSurfing with me.

In Los Angles I welcomed travelers to Los Angeles from around the world. I offered friendship, and introduced them to Hollywood and southern California. I also participated in many CS events in LA, and because I am a chef, I especially enjoyed cooking parties, picnics, and potluck dinners.

Music, Movies, and Books

I make pictures myself, active in the Paris filmmaking community. I directed a movie in Paris recently, and I shall be directing another picture again soon, I hope.

My favorite movies are those that portray real human situations and are about the emotions, concerns, fears, and desires that are common to all people in every country of the world. My most recent favorite is Elle s'Appellait Sarah. Some of my enduring favorites are: Jean de Florette et Manon des Sources, Les Dimanches de Ville d'Avray, La Cage aux Folles, The Reader, Derzu Uzala, Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Second-Hand Lions, The Imposters, Wicker Park, Hors de Prix, Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?, l'Année Derniere à Marienbad, Miss Potter, The Usual Suspects, Sleuth (Olivier/Caine), The Seven Percent Solution, Vertigo, 84 Charing Cross Road, The April Fools, Charade, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Oscar, Invasion of The Body Snatchers (1956), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Amélie, Moulin Rouge, Dr. Strangelove, Woman In The Window (Fritz Lang), Somewhere In Time, Much Ado About Nothing (Branaugh), Dr. Zhivago, Chicago, Lawrence of Arabia, Bridge on The River Kwai, Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland (1951), and all Kubrick.

Books I enjoy are usually historical fiction, weird/original stuff, and caring, human dramas. Alexandre Dumas has been a significant influence in my life. Some of my favorite books are To Kill A Mockingbird, The d'Artagnan and Musketeers saga, The Count of Monte Cristo, Les Miserables, Gone With The Wind, Skinny Legs and All, The Time Travelers Wife, The Magus.

I most enjoy classical music and jazz (especially 1930s).

I've met many extraordinary people. Among them are Walt Disney, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Orson Welles, and Neil Armstrong. Over the years, since going to Hollywood at age 19, I've met a lot of my childhood screen heroes including actors, directors, writers, cinematographers, and many illustrious international filmmakers.

Teach, Learn, Share

I always look forward to times when I can share my experience of motion picture making and teach what are the important aspects of constructive cinema criticism and scholarship. As an expert-level gourmet chef, I very much enjoy teaching people how to cook. I am also an accomplished organic grower and I can teach you to play my fiddle.
