ABOUT ME

Hai. :D

I'm AJ. I'm 18, young and restless, and looking to make it [Whatever that even means :p] in New York City. Well, Brooklyn. :p

I'm a musician heavily inspired by NIN, U2, Regina Spektor, Blind Melon, Amanda Palmer/Dresden Dolls... oh, the list goes on.

I play keys.

I'm into alternative rock and indie film.

I've been in Bushwick, Brooklyn now since August 1st. I'm incredibly happy here. It's a beautiful neighborhood that is part of an even more beautiful collective city.

I grew up in Alabama and have since met incredible people all over the state. An honorable mention for the town of Arab, Gilbertown, and the city of Birmingham. I'm keeping cloooose ties with those people, and my Birmingham friends are who got me into the idea of couch surfing in the first place!

p.s. I honestly wish my friends from Birmingham and a few other places would accept my friend requests so I actually looked like I had contacts on here!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've actually not surfed or hosted yet. Gotta have that first time for everything! Hopefully very soon! As my friend and I are coming up to Boston November 2nd and November 3rd to see The Dresden Dolls! We're looking for someone(s) friendly, interesting, like minded, who can give us the Boston experience! Maybe have a few drinks or go out on the town. Piano people are a plus! as we're big keyboardist/singers.

So, we definitely want to be there the night of november 2nd, but november 3rd is a maybe. His name is Rian and he doesn't have couchsurfing but he has facebook. This was of course my idea. :D

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies! I like dark comedies, anything kind of existentialist be it lighter or darker, strange films that draw the line between erotica and a narrative.

Five favorites: Gummo, Kids, Party Monster, Mysterious Skin, Smiley Face.

Favorite directors: Gregg Araki, Bruce La Bruce, Harmony Korine, Larry Clark, Gus Van Sant.

Music! I love all kinds of alternative rock as well as some jazz, musical theatre, club/electronic shit and so on. Favorite acts are: Nine Inch Nails, U2, RENT, Velvet Underground, Party Monster soundtrack, Silversun Pickups, The Dresden Dolls, The Kills, Radiohead, The Folk Implosion.

Books! I love dark nihilistic novels about all kinds of shit. Chuck Palahniuk, Irvine Welsh, Will Christopher Baer.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

At this point in my life, especially as I've only traveled a little... I'd have to say my most dynamic experience has been visiting and soon feeling compelled (lol) to move to New York.

I realized for years that all of my favorite films, bands, artists, productions of theatre, etc. often had some sort of New York centric imagery. New York was portrayed in a very gritty yet cultural and diverse light.

Coming here with a soundtrack of Regina Spektor and Yeah Yeah Yeahs sealed the deal for me. I can hang off a fire escape, having a smoke, and just breathe and enjoy life for hours.
