Overview
About Me
Hello, I am a young professional in Durham, NC, USA. I live with my partner in a cozy house in a neighborhood a bit north of vibrant downtown Durham. I have a couple jobs that I really enjoy. I work for a few theaters as a stagehand and board operator and for the City of Durham Transportation Department as the Bicycle and Pedestrian intern. I am currently applying to graduate school to become a high school history teacher.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I am on Couchsurfing because I want to meet and host new people from around the world. I also want to gain some connections and advice for future travels.
Interests
I have pretty wide-ranging interests. I love riding, fixing, and advocating for bicycles. I volunteer as a mechanic at a local bicycle cooperative and work for the city's Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator. I am a daily commuter and ride my bicycle rain or shine.
I also have a deep passion for the water, particularly sailing. I have worked on a few boats as a deckhand, maintained a fleet of small sailboats, and taught sailing for seven or eight years. Most recently, I led unsupported sailing trips for youth in the San Juan Islands.
Additionally, I love film, literature, music, camping, food, cooking, coffee, travel, teaching, and meeting new people.

Music, Movies, and Books
I listed to just about any genre of music and listen to a lot of college radio for the variety. Jazz might be my favorite genre.
I see a lot of new and classic films at local theaters and find it difficult to pick favorites.
Lately, I have mostly read the news but recent favorite books have been Bulgakov's Master and Margarita and Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I spent last summer leading groups of kids on extended, unsupported sailing trips throughout the San Juan Islands in northwest Washington. I taught sailing theory, boat handling, navigation, camping, stewardship, and other topics on a 24' traditional boat with no motor on trips up to a week in length. The scenery, wildlife, and sailing were incredible.
Teach, Learn, Share
I love learning and teaching and plan to pursue a career as a history teacher. Additionally, I spend most every Sunday teaching bicycle repair at the local bicycle cooperative.
What I Can Share with Hosts
Zoe and I are happy to offer sleeping arrangements and other basic accommodations, a kitchen to use, and some shared meals. Time permitting, we would also love to offer a tour of Durham (possibly by bike).
