Music, Movies, and Books

The book I just put in my suitcase is Benvenuto Cellini Autobiography, a celebrated goldsmith and distinguished sculptor of the Renaissance... Can you guess my profession? ;)

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

On my last trip to the US, on the plane to the JFK airport, I was seated in the back when the stewards moved almost everyone to the front to make place for some refugees. They asked me if it would bother me if I stayed seated in between them? "No, absolutely not!" and so I had the honor to meet these lovely kid refugees from Ethiopia! No word of English, no possessions only the cloths they had on them and a plastic bag (logo of United Nations) with their paperwork... it became clear they have never had been in contact with the western society: they had no idea how to open the package of peanuts nor how food could get hot within a closed paper box (that was a slice of pizza), they really didn't like the taste of coke but the sweet applejuice and water were their staple drinks! I helped, and it was lovely to see how quickly they learned/shared the info of how to open things, what drinks are nice to have. The best was when I open the system to listen to some music and watch some movies on the little screen before me. The little boy in the next seat was so curious he looked and leaned over so many times and in the end he crawled on my lap to see ;) and then he turned around and pointed to his screen with a questioning face "why is my screen not working?" so I started it up for him. Then his little neighbor pulled my arm and also pointed at his screen. In the end the stewards, the man accompanying them and I, we started it for all of them. All this happened with signs and nodding and pointing! It was great to see the willingness to ask and learn. it was for me a bit travelling through time, because a life time ago I myself was a bit in the same situation! They were standing on the threshold of a entire new adventure of learning all about a culture, new homes, new friends and I hope truly for them a possible reunion with their family!
