About Me

I am a middle school teacher who likes to take advantage of time off from school to travel. I teach in Connecticut and live just over the border in a coastal community in Rhode Island. I have lived in Bolivia and Brazil, and have traveled to Europe, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco and several places in North America.

On June 28, 2016, I will be leaving the US for a year-long trip. I will be spending most of the summer in Honduras, then head to Vietnam in the fall for a four-month fellowship. After that, I will be traveling in SE Asia until June, 2017. I look forward to hosting again when I return.

If you'd like to follow my adventures, here is my blog address which will soon be up and running: http://tflanagan.us/yearabroad/

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Hoping to meet other travelers through group meetings, and eventually host travelers at my home. I look forward to learning about others' cultures.

Interests

I just completed a graduate program in instructional technology and am into learning how to use new tech tools in education. I am teaching myself the basics of photography and want to take incredible travel photos on future trips. I mostly enjoy learning about the world by meeting others.

Music, Movies, and Books

The music of Brazil left a lasting impression on me during my time there. I always seek out new artists and enjoy discovering new sounds.

I usually am drawn to art house films and not the big blockbusters.

I read a lot of middle school literature, but one of the recent great adult books I read was Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom. Find Me Unafraid by Kennedy Odede and Jessica Posner was another amazing read.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I adopted my two sons from Brazil, was a foster parent to several children, and now have grandchildren.

Teach, Learn, Share

Well, I know a lot about middle school students . . . so I'm happy to tutor your children. If you're a teacher, I can help you out with using technology in the classroom and share other resources.

I will share my experience teaching and traveling overseas, and if you're interested in adoption or foster care, I have plenty of stories to tell.

Mostly, I'm a good listener, so I'd love to learn about you and where you're from.
