About Me

I'm a futurist, author, design economist, and professor based in Tampa who loves to explore new ideas, connect with fascinating people, and discover the hidden gems that only locals know about.

Whether discussing how technology and especially communication shape social systems, exploring historic sites to understand how past societies organized themselves, or sharing stories about the fascinating people we've met through travel, meaningful conversations fuel my curiosity.

An afternoon detour to visit Andrew Carnegie's birthplace via train between Glasgow and Edinburgh perfectly captures how I travel - always looking for those unexpected connections (often using Google Maps) between place, history, and the human stories that shaped them. Museums and historic sites fascinate me because they reveal the layers of decision-making that created the world we inhabit today.

ADVENTURES AHEAD: Deciding where to spend about 20 days for my winter break. 🤔💬 Planning to visit my brother in Jakarta (summer 2026) and watch the total solar eclipse in Egypt (August 2027). Until then, I'm open to wherever interesting conversations and kind hosts might emerge.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Five years of hosting over 80 travelers from more than 20 countries in Tampa, Florida, gave me incredible experiences and a deep appreciation for the Couchsurfing community. While I surfed a bit during that time, I am now able to travel more often and more extensively.

Through my Design Economics Podcast, I explore topics like post-capitalist economic futures, partnership-centric feminist economics, and how the social sector is driving innovative approaches to community challenges. I'm always curious about how different people and places are building the future. (https://designeconomics.io)

As a host, I've loved seeing my own city through the fresh eyes of my guests and take deep joy in showing them around. I love just as much to be on the receiving end of that when I travel. Couchsurfing provides that connection.

Interests

Writing is a significant part of my profession and a passion. I love exploring local food scenes and discovering great restaurants and cafes. Running and hiking help me think clearly, and there's nothing quite like live music in an intimate venue. I'm drawn to conversations about economics, history, philosophy, and consciousness - especially over a good beer with people who have different experiences from mine.

Music, Movies, and Books

My reading spans from classical economics to contemporary critics and alternative thinkers who challenge traditional frameworks. I'm drawn to books exploring how technology and society intersect, like Erik Brynjolfsson's "The Second Machine Age" and Douglas Rushkoff's "Team Human," plus biographies of innovative figures like Steve Jobs. I'm particularly fascinated by the work of Leonard Shlain and his daughter Tiffany - his books like "The Alphabet Versus the Goddess" and "Leonardo's Brain" explore creativity and consciousness, while her "24/6" offers insights on digital wellness and our relationship with technology. My current reading includes The Pilgrimage by Paulo Coelho and The Light Eaters by Zoë Schlanger.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Used Couchsurfing to travel to and speak at TEDxAkron in 2018 - turning a speaking opportunity into a chance to connect with the local community. I even got to host one of my hosts when they visited Tampa for a friend's wedding.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can share stories from years of hosting international travelers, travel recommendations from home and places I've been, and enthusiasm for whatever you're passionate about. I'd love to learn your local perspective and hidden favorite spots, or the best cafe or pub in town. I enjoy discussing the future of society, local history, travel stories, and pretty much anything that sparks curiosity.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I bring engaging conversation and genuine curiosity about your city, along with helpful hands for meals, projects, or whatever you need. My time on Couchsurfing has taught me a lot about being a good host and adaptable guest.
