Hello, I'm Otto from Helsinki, Finland! Hopefully you are interested in meeting me as a host, a guest or just for grabbing a coffee!

I work in international sales for a Finnish medical device company, so I travel a lot both for work and for fun. With a background in engineering anything related to science and technology is always interesting. Besides this I'm also a friend of history and culture, and interested in how it has shaped our societies. During my studies I was involved in many different student organizations and am still an active alumni, so I have soft spot for anything related to academic traditions.

When I'm not working or traveling I like running, lifting weights, cooking, sauna, beer and parties, playing and watching video games and trying to improve my Russian skills. I grew up on a sparsely populated small island with no roads and only accessible by boat, so even though I now enjoy urban life in downtown Helsinki, I also feel at home in the woods and at sea.

I've also realized that the best experiences I've had in my life have been things that have taken me outside my comfort zone and which made me feel a bit scared, worried or skeptical if it ever will work out. Therefore I like to keep an open mind for new opportunities to try something I've haven't done yet. This is also why I love traveling so much since you are always in new situations and a reason why CS is a pretty cool concept, you never know who you will end up with!

Examples of great experiences resulting from going out of the comfort zone: Taking dancing classes, hitchhiking the American west coast as a 19-year old kid on my first solo trip, signing up for a half marathon, doing my military service, CouchSurfing and hosting CouchSurfers, moving to Siberia and living in Russia for one year, learning how to cook a nice dinner, giving a speech to 300 people, going on a cruise from Europe to Brazil, traveling alone to a festival in Eastern Europe just to see my favorite band.... and many more things!

I used to be quite active but haven't been using CS much the last years since I've had a bit of a hectic life or haven't had a place suitable for hosting. Nowadays I'm usually hosting mostly old friends I've met during my travels over the years, but I'm of course always open to hosting or surfing with new people when possible!

MEETING PEOPLE. I'm not really traveling to see all the usual tourist attractions in each city and country. Of course some places you just need to see, but my main focus in traveling is to meet people from different countries and cultures, because that's just an awesome thing to do. That's why I registered on this site.

As for actual activities, I'm quite open. For example: concerts (any cool gig really, doesn't matter what genre), watching or taking part in sport events, bathing in the sauna, drinking beer, dancing in a club, science and technology, history, video games, cooking delicious food, outdoor stuff, weight lifting, watching a good movie, chilling on the beach.

Basically I'm open for almost anything that will give me an awesome experience that I can tell about to my friends to make them jealous of how cool my life is.

Movies: Anything mainstream is usually fine no matter what genre (except horror movies, yuck), but I really enjoy historical fiction and drama or some nice Sci-Fi.

Series: Pretty much anything on HBO (Game of Thrones, Westworld etc. !) , Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Suits, the West Wing, Scrubs, Silicon Valleys, Homeland, Mad Men. So much good stuff on Netflix also these days!

Books: mostly non-fiction, history, science and technology

I can tell you about Finland and its culture and history. I can try to show you the Finnish way of life and tour Helsinki with you. I can tell some travel stories and listen to yours.

Language teaching: I'm natively bilingual in Finnish & Swedish and fluent in English. I've also studied Russian language and lived in Russia so always interested in practicing that.
