Karlsruhe is a circular city, with a grand palace at its center and the rest of the city radiating out from there. You won’t see many cities like this, and the layout of the city was interesting enough to be used as a blueprint for Washington D.C. When visiting Karlsruhe, it makes sense to start at the heart of things: Karlsruhe Palace. This is a regal palace of monumental proportions, and it includes a tower with a perfect view of the city and an incredible amount of green space in its sprawling gardens.

A unique sight that you’ll only find in Karlsruhe is its famous Pyramid. Built over the vault of the city’s founder, this 21-foot-tall sandstone pyramid in the market square is an emblem of the city. For another unique experience, make your way to Wirsthaus Wolfsbräu, the original location of the Wolfsbräu brewery, the oldest family-managed brewery in the city. The Wirsthaus has been declared a historic monument, and still offers a variety of local dishes and beers.
