Located near the Taiwanese capital of Taipei, Chiu-tsung-li and its surrounding areas are incredible places to visit for those looking for a genuine and unique East Asian experience. Visitors can be a part of the awesome Sky Lantern Festival on Pingxi Old Street, where thousands of people write their wishes on paper lanterns and release them into the night sky. Another quirky sight near Chiu-tsung-li is the famous Cat Village in Houtong, a former coal-mining village that is now home to thousands of cats. There are cat cafes and shops, and even a special bridge over the railway so that the cats can cross the tracks safely.

Chiu-tsung-li owes so much of its appeal to the natural surroundings of northern Taiwan. One beautiful sight to see is the Lao Mai green algae reef, featuring strange ripples of algae-covered stone at the water’s edge. Also be sure to snap some photos of the whimsical rock formations at Yehliu Geopark, then head down the coast to the Bitou Cape Lighthouse, perched on a lush green point with a stunning view of the coastline.
