About Me

P.S. I wish I could host but as I‘m still living with my parents, I won’t be able to do that. Gonna change my profile once it’s possible. So, please don’t get me wrong.

Hi! I am Zulian from Indonesia, a Mathematics Student at one of the public universities in Indonesia. I grew up in a "multicultural" family who have built me into who I am now. My father is Bataknese (North Sumatran), and my mother is mixed between Sumatran Malay (Palembang from my grandpa) and Chinese (Hokkian from my grandma).

I love to travel, catch up with new people, learn about history, and try national dishes from around the world. I would like to connect and share my stories with others.

Having interests in tradition, culture, and human development, also love to socialize with intercultural societies.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I love to connect with new people, especially foreigners and other local communities from outside where I live, to learn about culture, society, and things that sound new to me. Moreover, I'd also like to know more than what the media has told us about.

Interests

I have interest in cultural exchange as this will open my eyes about how big, unique and various the world is. People's stories about their life can be such good lessons I can receive, I'll be a good listener for everyone.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: I like to explore and listen to various types of music. You can suggest anything to try and listen as I'm very open to any genre (as long as it's catchy and not too much hehe).

So far, I like Coldplay, Joost Klein, ABBA, Måneskin, Empire of the Sun, Nina Chuba, Cro, Rin, Ski Aggu, Zoë Më, Videoclub, SZA, Hikaru Utada, Joji, Rich Brian, NIKI, Fujii Kaze, Westlife, Backstreet Boys, Indila, Ed Sheeran, One Direction, Five Seconds of Summer, Maroon 5, Panic! At The Disco, and many more.

Movies: I usually like to watch biographies, sci-fi, comedy, fiction, action, crime fiction, and fantasy. Not a big fan of horror and heavy romance, but why not (if it's good)... I also watch some series, but not many.

So far, what I can remember are Interstellar, The Imitation Game, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Theory of Everything, Hidden Figures, Steve Jobs, The Danish Girl, Crazy Rich Asians, Extraction, Men in Black, Bad Genius, Hunger, and Memoirs of A Geisha. For series, I'd say The Brothers Sun, Full House, and F4 (Taiwan and Korea).

Books: Similar to movies, but so far, I haven't had time to read. However, it's one of my hobbies.

So far, my favourites are The Jacatra Secret, Memoirs of Geisha, and Atomic Habits. I used to read many comics, but really many, so I forgot about the titles. Very open to more recommendations.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I received 2 scholarships from my university. First, to be a "guest" teacher to teach Mathematics in English in a local Thai school (for high and middle school levels). During that time, I immersed myself in local culture, made some new friends, and gave a speech at the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, back in 2023.

The second one, my uni sent me to learn about the Malaysian education system, Malaysian culture, environmental problems, and cyber-security on a campus in Mersing, Johor, Malaysia, back in 2024.

Additionally, I also did a brief internship in Bali. Where I met new people from around the world, learnt about the local culture, explored less touristy places, and got insights from others based on their life experiences.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach: I can teach you my mother tongue language (Indonesian), of course, simple words for beginners, and I do love to try to spell and speak in your language too. Well, would try to give you some differences between Indonesian and Malaysian Malay too!

Learn: We can learn about our cultures and engage in cultural exchanges. Well, your language, culture, cook, food, insight, history, religion, city, country, literally anything!

Share: When I meet people, discussing various topics and sharing our thoughts about something are essential things for me. Moreover, I can share my experiences and maybe local products from Indonesia. BTW, I also love to cook if there's an opportunity.

What I Can Share with Hosts

My experience and culture: As an Indonesian who loves traveling, has big dreams, and loves to learn about new cultures. Moreover, I have learnt about cultures and societies from different places, and surely based on my background.

Souvenirs/snacks: I'd like to share about my culture through souvenirs and snacks, as they would be hard to find outside Indonesia.

Friendship and connection: Sure, after we meet each other, we're friends...

Help: I ain't hesitate to help my host if needed (like cleaning)
