Very connected to my community, always doing something, and trying to take a breath now and then!

ABOUT ME

I love the arts and culture of the city, but spending time in the outdoors is another favorite pastime. I grew up in the woods about an hour south of here by Mt. Rainier. I was a high school chemistry teacher, but chose to leave to pursue a new path where I could be writing - a passion of mine. My current job is a great blend of science and writing - I love it!

PHILOSOPHY

I grew up with a desire to better my environment, both locally and globally. I'm active in a peace and social justice ministry, and also serve on the nonprofit board that organizes First Night, our New Year's Eve performing arts festival. I can't imagine how I would live my life if I wasn't a part of stuff in some way.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have gone to local CS events and met some great people. Some of us organized a camping trip together after meeting at an event. I also went to a CS event in Mexico City when I was there. I met Aurora who I ended up hanging out with quite a bit. She took me to karaoke and her college campus - it was a blast!

I talk about CS to everyone I can, here and in my travels. I try to emphasize what a rewarding experience it has been for me.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have mostly been on the hosting side. I have hosted singles, couples, and a group of 6 twenty-somethings who were in the area fundraising for a year of mission work they were going to be educating people about child care, HIV, etc. in Belize. I have enjoyed taking CS'ers to local restaurants & bars, I even took my first CS'er to yoga class with me! I love hearing about people, their lives and where they are from. I love to travel, and I love to open my home to people.

My former husband and I had joined Couch Surfing in 2008 and loved it. We were hosting people from all over the world on our own, long before we knew about Couch Surfing. As an adult I hosted two exchange students, and my family hosted four students when I was a kid. I also took in a total stranger who was filing for asylum in the US.

I love music - including singing karaoke. I enjoy reading. I love anything in the outdoors - especially a walk/hike in the forest and a dip in the water (any water). Unique and fringy performing arts (music, dance, aerialists, burlesque, theatre) are a fave - but I don't see as much as I used to.

Music - most music besides country, esp. Muse, White Stripes, Cake, Queen. Books - Recent titles are Devil in the White City, The Draining Lake (Icelandic author) and still in love with To Kill a Mockingbird. Movies - Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, As Good as it Gets, Drop Dead Gorgeous, The Artist.

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

One of the most powerful moments in my life was when I visited the Basillica in Mexico City. This is where Juan Diego's apron is, upon which some believe a vision of Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared in 1531. I don't know what happened in 1531, but what I was struck by was the faith of the people I saw. I was so moved by the unwavering faith, how people had come to this place for hope, peace, atonement, or who knows. You could feel it in your bones. I strive for faith like that, be it faith in God, the human race, or myself. If you ever can, please visit.
