A drive in a hired car is the best for me (6-8hrs depending on the car and speed)... the route is quite scenic and you can actually stop for sight seeing along the way. When I have time, this is how i like traveling to Durban from Joburg. Flights are usually cheap and quick ( 1 hour) - so that is also an alternative. However, if your trip coincides with "durbun July" an annual horse race event in Durban, flights may be very expensive, driving may be idea.

Generally both options very safe and have their benefits and disadvantages.

I fly when I wish to visit Durban, but for a traveler a road trip would be better, car hire is good which permits you to stop over in the Drakensberg on the way down, if your budget does not permit that then take a bus which is available on the West side of Johannesburg train station - a round building called Rotunda.

I would suggest a road trip. Approximately 5 hour drive. Excellent road. A number of attractions on the way.
