In brief, I'm reasonably well traveled and educated, have a pretty good sense of humor (but I can't remember a joke to save my life!), and am extremely patient and non-judgmental. I am very polite and am completely respectful of all people and points of view. People generally find me a reasonably intelligent and entertaining conversationalist.
I really enjoy a good backgammon match. Love to cook and I come up with some pretty creative concoctions ... well occasionally they don't work out too well, but it's fun nonetheless! Most times, however, I come up with some really tasty stuff Cheesecakes are one of my specialties, my favorite being white chocolate raspberry and bananas fosters cheesecakes.
I spent a year between high school and college hitchhiking around Europe and since then have traveled extensively, on both business and pleasure, around both the US and Europe. Vagabonding is in my blood I'm afraid!
I have taken up photography on my journeys and that takes up much of my spare time.
"The world is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion." T. Paine
Nothing could describe my approach better than the saying "Practice random kindness and senseless acts of beauty" Observing it in the actions of others always puts a smile in my soul.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
Have been traveling a bit and have stayed with many wonderful people. When I am stationary, I love to open my home to others.
After an extended period in Newfoundland, I found my plans to vagabond around norther Spain and Portugal then across Asia sidelined by the birth of a grandson down here in the Charleston area. Now a full-time Grandude (I'm way too young to be a 'grandpa'!!!), I'm having the time of my life!
**** Friday nights are generally not good ****
**** I really try to get back to everyone, but Charleston is a VERY popular spot, especially in the spring and fall, and sometimes I am overwhelmed by the requests!!! *****
I really enjoy both hosting and being hosted, meeting all the fascinating diversity of people that make life so interesting. I've made many friends along the way.
As a host I find profiles very important in understanding who is requesting to stay with me... references and photos tell a lot about a person and I rely on them heavily. I've met a number of Couchsurfers that don't host anyone that don't themselves host... I'm not one of those as I understand that people live in a variety of circumstances and aren't able for one reason or another to host. My only red flag is a surfer that has a number of references but never writes references back... to me it is important for the validity of the site to share the experiences you have with others. I'm unlikely to host those that don't write references.

Music, Movies, and Books
My musical tastes pretty much run the entire range... classical, country, jazz, classic rock, etc... other than rap and bluegrass I'll probably be happy with just about anything that's playing!
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Watching a violent lightning storm from above during a commercial flight.
Spending a day kayaking out on the ocean with a flock of puffins.
Sitting on the top of the Alps, drinking hot cocoa while soaking in the sun and admiring the awe inspiring view.
Resting in the sun near a waterfall.
