About Me

Hello friends,

My name is AJ, and I'm traveling with my fiance Sabrina around Portland for spring break- and all on short notice! So, thank you for reading my message. If we stay with you we'll treat you like an old friend, so lets get the small talk out of the way:

1. I'm a student of mathematical physics at SFU in B.C., and I'll totally talk Physics or the Philosophical Implications of physics with you!

Sabrina studies English literature at UBC in B.C., and that's it. :P

2. I'm a vegetarian and Sabrina is Italian meaning she was raised on salami! Don't worry, we don't care to discuss diet choices!

3. We're half decent cooks on a budget! Got a blender? Let us make you our avocado-sauce or roasted garlic and cherry tomato pasta, yum :).

I used couchsurfing back in 2014 for an epic bike ride from Canada to Los Angeles and I met the most amazing people. I'm really excited to use it again and I hope I can host you in return some day!

See you soon,

AJ, Sabrina

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

//written in 2016//

In 2014 I finished a solo bicycle tour from Vancouver, Canada to Los Angeles. It was incredibly challenging, since I had barely ridden a bicycle before. But the hardest part wasn't burning through thigh muscles and boxer shorts... the hardest part was sitting at a bus station in Santa Cruz, alone, broke and broken. In front of me was a man saying tickets to Los Angeles were $15 and the ride was only 8 hours long. If I kept biking, I knew I'd have another 40 pedaling hours to go, plus of the expenses of eating my fuel.

I sat long and hard. Thought of my family in L.A., in Vancouver. Thought of my reason for starting the trip in the first place. Then I got on my bike anyway, and finished.

I've always been very proud of myself for that.

I once saw a wave stop and turn around.

I was motoring between two islands towards a white crease in the ocean - a wave one kilometre wide. The wave was wild. It splashed and thrashed. Parts rose a meter clear of the water. Parts stayed low, bulging out of the surface. But the wave stayed straight as a sewn seam in blue jeans.

When we collided, I hit nothing. The wave sunk below me and my eyes followed it under, meeting the gaze of many happy porpoises. I recall their heads tilting as they passed and their choir of tails that followed. The tails sounded like loose papers slapping the concrete in heavy wind.

They passed, and I watched.

They were only 200 meters behind me when they stopped and returned. The wave came quicker. But was not wild. It was certain. Steady. When we collided, no eyes peered upwards, no tails surfaced. The wave just swam.
