ABOUT ME

I come from the confluence of the Cowlitz and Coweeman rivers with the Columbia river, in southwest Washington State. I grew up in the mossy forests, river valleys, and sand beaches of that land. I've since left that place, traveling to new lands and countries, finding beautiful people and places everywhere. I now find myself settling in Canada, learning about frozen winters and boreal forests.

PHILOSOPHY

I am glad to be here on the earth, to be in human form, and to share life with the other beings around me. I am open to all sorts of people, and love to find the shared connections between even the most different among us.
I try to approach the challenges that arrive as opportunities for growth, and to give gratitude for the blessings I receive.

我为什么加入 Couchsurfing

I see Couchsurfing as a way to provide mutual aid to others in my global community, creating alternatives to the commercial exchanges that can dominate our lives, especially when traveling. This is super important to me, both as a traveler and as a host, as so I participate when I can.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have used Couchsurfing sporadically over the years, hosting in some shared houses in Seattle, and staying with folks on my travels. When hosting, I do my best to orient folks to my town, to share food with them, exchange stories and wisdoms, and help them out if any problems arise. I've had some great times with my guests, and love the boost of liveliness that can come with having a stranger become a friend in your home. As a traveler, I share the mindset of the newly arrived and try to bring that same energy of discovery and friendship that I've received as a host.

I prefer art that elicits strong emotion, and that encourages me to interact. This can take many forms of course.

I love music jams, improvised or following a form, and am always happy to play, sing, or tap along with others. I listen to all kinds of music and prefer artists that speak from the heart, critique society, or play with passion. Some favorites over the years have been Pink Floyd, The White Stripes, Jurassic 5, and Xavier Rudd.

For movies, I like when I am immersed in an experience, not overly dramatic, with a touch on something very true to life. I associate easily with characters, and so I want to watch ones that will teach me something new. Recently, I saw "Only Lovers Left Alive" by Jim Jarmusch, that left a deep impression and made me smile for days after.

Book-wise, I love to read speculative fiction, or near future sci-fi that explores social ideas; what could be, what will be, how we would be different if, how we can change. I like to read history as well, but its definitely a bit more work to stay with it. Ursula Le Guin (Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed) and Octavia Butler (Parable of the Sower) are two of my favorites.

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

Through hiking on the Washington coast for 5 days by myself, watching the sand and rocks change, and living with the rhythm of the sea for awhile. I was born too, which while I don't remember it all, seems to be an amazing thing.

I can share what I know about fermenting vegetables, making sourdough bread and tempeh. I love to cultivate microorganisms and allow them to pre-digest my food, and more than happy to share the skills needed to do so. I'm also happy to chat about and problem solve gardening problems, general life logistical hangups, and basic technical issues. I can teach a bit about math and physics.

I'm always excited to learn about plants and fungi, to discover new recipes, to learn new languages, and to understand how systems work.
