About Me

CURRENT MISSION
Survive the summer, continue to be able to pay the rent, and keep living a good story

ABOUT ME

I'm a bit of a vagabond adventurer I guess? I'm always interested in seeing new places, meeting new people, and doing new things. I read voraciously, and enjoy eating and cooking great food, among other things. I grew up traipsing around in the woods of northwestern PA, and have never stopped just wanting to be outside, enjoying and exploring this glorious planet. I tend to gravitate towards what some people call "type 2" fun; Basically, the kind of experiences that when you tell the story, people often don't understand why it was awesome, or even enjoyable. I'm sure a lot of you all know exactly what I'm talking about.

My job comes with a seriously wonky schedule, and keeps me away from a computer for 8-10 days at a time, so advance planning will give you a better shot, and don't despair if I don't get back to you right away.

PHILOSOPHY

"Fortune favors the bold"

Life is a glorious adventure, or nothing at all. I do my very best to live in a way that will never leave me regretting not having done something I could have. It might leave me as flaming wreckage at some point, but until then I'm going to burn as brightly as I can, and share the flame with whoever wants or needs it.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'm a long time member, but haven't used the site much. I find myself in a much more travel heavy lifestyle now, and also finally have a place where I can host couchsurfers so couchsurfing is back on my radar

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

None as of yet, stay tuned though!

Interests

My interests are myriad, but sailing and backpacking are pretty chief among them. I currently windsurf and sail hobie cats off the beaches and in the back bays of south jersey in my free time, and backpack with troubled kids for a living. I also pretty much always have some sort of creative project on my plate, from a new drawing in my sketch book to forging a new kitchen knife or welding on a sculpture.

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm a sci fi/ fantasy junkie. I've always hesitated to admit that in favor of more "intelligent" literary stuff that would make me sound less nerdy, but screw that, it's not me! I read other genres, just not with nearly the frequency of my mainstay.
Books:
-The Malazan Book of the Fallen- Steven Erikson
-The Dark Tower Series- Stephen King
-Dune- Frank Herbert
-The Kingkiller Chronicles- Patrick Rothfuss
and too many more to list...

Movies:
-Most anything by Guy Ritchie
- Star Wars (not the prequels mind you)
-Indiana Jones
-V for Vendetta

Music:
I'm all over the place. I listen to more instrumental music than anything else, much of it orchestral, but plenty of it electronic or more random funky stuff like David Holmes. I also listen quite a lot of Metal (and for the sanity of you, reader, I won't delve into metal sub genres haha) as well as Bluegrass and Celtic music

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I was part of the crew of an 85' 19th century design schooner (in pretty rough shape)sailing from New York City to Georgetown, Guyana, S. America. Non-stop, over 36 days, from early december to january. We made it despite suffering serious damage to our rudder system, crazy bad hull leaks (think waterfall), a couple of completely destroyed sails, and countless other mishaps. It was a wild ride.

Teach, Learn, Share

Things i know: How to sail, useful knots and other ropework, primitive and not so primitive wilderness/survival skills, WFR level wilderness first aid, how to work on motorbikes and cars/trucks, brewing and meadmaking, how to make bows, blacksmithing, welding, and general metalwork

Things I'd like to learn: More spanish, rock climbing, delicious new recipes, more trauma medicine skills, natural medicine, and plenty of other things i can't think of right now...

What I Can Share with Hosts

Hmmmm, I'm a solid cook, I'm pretty sure the stories I tell are entertaining, I clean a mean kitchen, and am very mechanically inclined if you need advice or help fixing/modifying/fabricating something.
