I was born in Riga. At the time it was USSR, now it's Latvia. Currently I'm working towards a PhD on the East Coast (the D.C. area). Before coming here I've studied and worked in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Scotland, and loved it..

It's a great project! Mainly, I've participated as a host.. when I studied in Riga, Latvia and also in Amsterdam. Unfortunately, after moving to the U.S. I haven't really been in a position to host. I've surfed less often (mostly in Belgium), but I enjoyed every single experience.

兴趣

The thing I enjoy the most is getting into some new culture: living and sharing with the locals, learning their language, and getting to know their customs, lifestyle, etc. But I also enjoy doing what I do for a living: using math to solve philosophical problems.

Here's a list of my favorite directors (random order): the Coen brothers, Charlie Kaufman, Danny Boyle, Terry Gilliam, Andrei Tarkovsky. Music: Blues, Jazz, Folk. Books: the classics (especially, Russian classics) and Latin American literature. Here're some works that have been in my top for more than five years: Dostoevsky's ``The Brothers Karamazov'', as well as ``The Devils'', Pasternak's ``Doctor Zhivago'' (used to be my Nr. 1), Bulgakov's ``The Master and Margarita'', Borges' short stories. And here are more books that have made it to the top more recently: Stendhal's ``The Red and the Black', Orwell's ``1984'', Fitzgerald's ``The Great Gatsby'', Juan Rulfo's ``Pedro Paramo'' (current Nr. 1).

Very hard to choose one. Here are a couple: (i) Hitchhiking from Riga to Paris to Lyon and back to Riga with my wife (fiancee at that time). (ii) Working at a l'Arche community (i.e., with mentally handicapped people). (iii) Becoming a dad, (iv) spending a summer in Mexico City.
