ABOUT ME

I'm Danny. I sing, play guitar, synths, read a bunch of books and watch a bunch of films. I play video games when I have the time. I write songs and occasionally dabble in theatre. I do union stuff and activism so the world can be a bit less scary. And have nowhere near enough time to do many of the things I want to do.

PHILOSOPHY

I’m a scientific naturalist and a mystic, and this combination makes complete sense to me. I could say I’m an animist, an existentialist, a pandeist. I think science and reason are pretty awesome because it means we can figure stuff out and make our lives better. I believe there's a deep spirituality to be found in the revelation of nature; far deeper than any spirituality which hides itself from truth. I believe the economy should serve the people, not the other way around; that respect and compassion for all living things (and the world that sustains them) should be the bedrock for our politics. I believe that the absurd, apocalyptic death cult of neoliberalism that drives late capitalism poses a greater threat to humanity than any ideology in human history, and that those of us fortunate enough to see through its propaganda must help others to do the same and work together to avert what catastrophe we still can and prepare for what we must, & start building alternatives for a better future.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I haven’t used this since a trip to Australia long ago, but now I’m in Europe for three months, and I want to make friends and find some nice places to stay!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My last (and only) Couchsurfing experience was an absolute delight - lovely friendly bohemian beans who showed me many sights of Melbourne and made me feel totally at home.

I adore golden age Hollywood films, particular Hitchcock. I also have a thing for old horror movies and a particular obsession with the haunted house genre. The dark and dreamlike intrigues me; I love my David Lynch, Maya Deren, Darren Aronofsky, David Cronenberg, among others. Huge fan of sci-fi as well, adore everything Denis Villineuve touches.

I listen to a fairly broad range of music - there's not much I won't listen to - but I have a particular obsession with 1980s new wave and post-punk, and I enjoy modern music which apes that. I’m also big on classical music, particularly the romantics. Romantic, new romantic, either way, I love it.

I enjoy gothic literature and modern fantasy/sci-fi. Neil Gaiman and Daphne Du Maurier are among my most-loved authors. I read a lot of difficult, kooky old esoteric texts in dubious translation to try to figure out what they were on about and extract things that are useful in my life and world, with varying (but more than zero) degrees of success.

Well, I've a Diploma in Audio Engineering and Music Production. A Political Science degree, half a music degree and half a philosophy degree (yeah, I *really* couldn’t make up my mind in my 20s). I can play guitar. And introduce you to some interesting films or music. Or read your Tarot. The choice is yours!
