About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To see the world through my eyes

ABOUT ME

My name's Ali Pryce, I'm 29 and I was born and raised in Burton upon Trent, England. After school I went to university in Nottingham, during which time I spent 6 months studying abroad in California. I lived in Madrid for about a year after university and now I'm back in England.

Through my Father's side of the family I have English and Welsh heritage, and I have Scottish, Irish and way way back some Danish heritage from my Mother's side of the family. I also have relatives that emigrated to Toronto, and we have visited them on three occasions.

PHILOSOPHY

Try everything at least once, that way you will never wonder what if. Life is short so make sure the glass is always half full and live with a smile your face.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I joined CouchSurfing in May 2011 and so far it's been a great experience. You get to see a place from the perspective of a local which is great, and it's a fantastic way of meeting cool new people.

Having spent 7 weeks travelling in America and using CouchSurfing as my accommodation I know what a great way it is to meet people and get to know a place.

I've surfed and hosted, and it's great to give something back after experiencing the generosity of many great hosts. It brings a whole new element to travelling, seeing cool spots in a city that a regular tourist would never experience and making friends on the way.

Interests

Sports and travel are my two big passions.

I participate in several sports such as Rugby Union, Ju-Jitsu, Running, Cycling, Swimming, Squash, Triathlon, Tennis, Golf and Football (or Soccer, depending where you come from). I've played Rugby Union since I was 11 for both my school, local club and my university. I have been practising Ju-Jitsu for several years and I'm currently a purple belt. When I was younger I had football/soccer trials twice with Derby County Football Club, who at the time were in the English Premiership, the most elite league in the country. While I wasn't successful it has been a keen interest of mine for as long as I can remember! Racket sports are something that I have always enjoyed, and I won some regional Tennis titles as a child.

Having ran in the 2010 London Marathon this has led me to develop an interest in endurance sports, I've since cycled the 900 mile length of the UK in 9 days (Land's End to John o' Groats) and taken part in a triathlon.

I love travelling to experience new places and cultures. Having travelled quite a lot and organised several holidays with friends in recent years, I would be able to share this enthusiasm and organisation with others.

I've seen quite a lot of Europe, and having spent a semester studying in California I've seen a lot of North America. I've also been to Asia and Africa. Latin America is next on the list.

Music, Movies, and Books

I love lots of music both to listen to, watch live bands and (attempt to) play on the guitar. Punk, Ska, Reggae and Rock are my favourite genres of music but I'm in to Metal, Hip-Hop/Rap, Drum n Bass and other stuff as well. My favourite band is Rancid, but I'm pretty open minded when it comes to music.

I like classic man films such as Anchorman, Scarface and the Terminator films but I'll usually give anything a go.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Skydiving.
Running the London Marathon.
Snorkling with sharks and stingrays in Belize.
Making it to the top of a Mayan temple above the jungle canopy and hearing the sounds in Tikal, Guatemala.
Hiking in Yosemite National Park.
Passing through Monument Valley during sunset.
Cruising down the Li River in China.
Driving through the Alps.
Cycling the UK end-to-end, 900 miles in 9 days.

Teach, Learn, Share

I have to admit that I first looked into CouchSurfing because I was going to be travelling on a limited budget and it allows you to have free accommodation. Thankfully I have learnt that it is so much more!

When visiting a new city it can be easy to find it overwhelming, but through CouchSurfing there are people just waiting to meet you, show you their town and be your friend. Having CouchSurfed, even if I was earning ridiculous amounts of money CouchSurfing would still be very much part of my travelling to learn about the places that I visit and the people that make travelling so enlightening.
