About Me

Hi, I’m Alireza, a traveler of both lands and ideas. I’m Persian by origin, but I like to think of myself as more than just where I come from. I cherish nature and humanity for their universal beauty—values that go beyond borders, cultures, or politics.

Starting fresh in New Zealand at late 30s has been a journey of rediscovery, where I’ve learned to navigate not only new landscapes but also the biases and preconceptions that can sometimes color first impressions. I believe in meeting people as they are, with open hearts and curious minds, and I aim to do the same in return.

As much as I’m shaped by the rich traditions of Persian culture, I don’t fit neatly into any mold. I’m a mix of contrasts: analytical yet creative, introspective yet sociable. Above all, I value genuine connections and shared experiences that remind us of the humanity we all share.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

For me, traveling isn’t about checking places off a list—it’s about meeting the people who make those places unique. Couchsurfing is my way of embracing diversity and challenging the narratives we’re often given about one another.

I’m here to exchange stories, cultures, and perspectives in a space free of judgment. I see this as an opportunity to foster understanding and add depth to each other’s journeys.

Interests

Nature Enthusiast: Hiking trails, mountain views, or a quiet moment by the sea—nature is my sanctuary.
Philosophy and Humanity: I love reflecting on what makes us human and the commonalities that bridge our differences.
Chess: Life is a game of strategy, and I enjoy the focus and patience it brings.
Persian Cuisine: Food is a love language, and I’d be thrilled to share the flavors of my homeland.
Breaking Stereotypes: I enjoy conversations that challenge preconceived notions and open up new ways of seeing the world.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: I have a diverse taste in music, ranging from soulful Persian melodies to classic rock, jazz, and modern indie tracks. Music, to me, is a universal language that transcends borders and speaks to the soul.
Movies: I’m a big fan of European cinema, especially films that challenge perceptions and evoke deep emotions. Directors like Lars von Trier, Andrei Tarkovsky, and Stanley Kubrick are some of my favorites.
From Tarkovsky: Stalker, Solaris, Andrei Rublev—masterpieces that combine visual poetry with profound themes.
From von Trier: Melancholia, Dogville, Breaking the Waves—bold narratives that explore human fragility and resilience.
From Kubrick: 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange—awe-inspiring works that redefine storytelling and filmmaking.
I love movies that linger in your mind long after the credits roll.
Books: I’m drawn to literature that delves into human nature, philosophy, and culture. Some of my favorite works include classics, thought-provoking memoirs, and non-fiction that expands the way I see the world.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Starting over in a new country in my late 30s was both the biggest challenge and the most rewarding adventure of my life. It taught me resilience, adaptability, and the beauty of stepping outside my comfort zone to build a life filled with meaning and connection.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach: I can share insights into Persian culture, history, and hospitality, and teach you how to cook authentic Persian dishes like saffron rice or tahdig. If you're up for a mental challenge, I can also teach you chess strategies or share tips on structural engineering (if you're into that!).
Learn: I’m eager to learn more about different cultures, languages, and perspectives. Whether it’s a new recipe, a skill, or your unique way of seeing the world, I’m always open to expanding my horizons.
Share: I’d love to share meaningful conversations, explore new places together, or simply connect over a shared meal. I also enjoy exchanging stories and breaking down stereotypes to discover the humanity that connects us all.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Cultural Exchange: A glimpse into Persian hospitality and traditions, alongside meaningful conversations about life, travel, and culture.
Cooking: I’d love to cook you a delicious Persian meal—think aromatic saffron rice, flavorful stews, or crispy tahdig.
Skills & Stories: Whether it’s teaching you chess strategies, sharing tales from my journey of starting fresh in a new country, or exchanging practical tips, I’m happy to contribute to your day.
Respectful Presence: I value your space and time, so I’ll be mindful and respectful throughout my stay.
