W G Grace was probably the world's first celebrity. He played cricket for Gloucestershire, London County and England, mostly in the late 19th Century. He was so well-known that England almost cancelled a tour of Australia when he refused to play unless his fee was doubled - the cricket board eventually agreed to double his fee. He's a great guy to read about, but would probably have been a terrible guy to have a drink with!
