音乐、电影和书籍

We'll I've been reading a lot of Lonely Planets travel books lately ;)
But my favourite book would have to be Jane Eyer by Charlotte Bronte.

For music, I'm a big fan of the Stars and Death Cab for Cutie. Oh oh! And you should definitely Myspace 'Noah and the Whale', 'Said the Whale', and 'Take Me To The Pilot'... all three are Canadian Bands!

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

A couple years ago, I had the chance to work as an Archaeologist here in Winnipeg (Canada). The government had plans to build a new museum at a place we call 'The Forks'. The Forks is a place where two rivers meet, and where our city was founded. Having been such a pivotal place in the regions geography, this area was used long before Europeans arrived in Canada. So anyway, back to the Archaeology. I was part of a team that excavated this area before the museum was build. Two months of sweaty and dirty digging, while we uncovered some beautiful projectile points (arrow heads) and even found an imprint of a human footprint... a step which was likely taken 600 years ago! Cool!

The following summer, 2009, I traveled with a group to students to the Canadian Arctic. Here we were immersed in an Inuit community. Local elders (who often spoke little to no English) shared with us knowledge about all things which included how/when/where to hunt, how to collect plants for medicine or food, and how to sew water proof stitches - crucial for traditional survival in the Arctic. We ate traditional meals like raw seal, caribou stew and wild berries. We hiked in the hills and swam in the inland lakes. In total I spend six weeks, but some times I cant believe it was such a short period - because I feel like I lived a life time along the shores of Cumberland Sound.

I think CouchSurfing is a great way for individuals to act as ambassadors for their country and culture. I get a kick out of the subtle and at other times vast differences between two cultures. Maybe that's my anthropological training speaking, but people are neat! I hope to share my perspective on the world and gain an understanding of yours.
