It's a great idea! This helps to meet people in a foreign country and really know the local culture. It also helps to know exactly what there is to do in a city. Because if we don't know , we can only do the tourist places and it's not very rewarding. I like discover friendly local places and there are only people who live here who can know that. This is the main reason of why I joined Couchsurfing.

I went two months in Sri Lanka for humanitarian aid . I was in an orphanage for boys. I helped the orphanage for two months , I organized games, lessons. It was very rewarding.
