ABOUT ME

I have lived in Portland, Maine all of my life, minus three years spent in Connecticut and one year in South Africa. I moved back here after graduating college in May 2004 thinking I would work one last summer job for a ferry boat company and hang out on the water for three or four months... I did it for two and a half years.

I lived in a small fishing community in eastern Maine for three years doing community development work with the commercial fishing industry and I have just recently returned to Portland to be closer to my friends and family and apply to grad school.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

i am lucky enough to have a good friend named marinus van driel who grew up in south africa. while i was living there junior year of college, i would regularly call him back in the united states, tell him the city i was in and he would tell me friends in that place. i would hang up with marinus, call his friends, and they would pick me up and take me to their homes and take care of me. i wondered why complete strangers would never do this to help people out in the united states. are we really that xenophobic? at that time i vowed to always help out friends, friends of friends, and now people from couchsurfing.com.

I have only hosted couch surfers once several years ago, but had a great experience. They were really nice folks
