One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Several years ago, when I was still earning my living translating books, I had occasion to phone the author of a novel I was working on. He was gracious and patiently answered all my questions. He encouraged me to call him if I had any further questions.

Two days later I heard from a mutual acquaintance that he was dead.

It's not the northern lights or the Grand Canyon, but it left me awestruck at the impermanence of things.
