About Me

Hi! My name’s Ashley and I’m not quite sure how it’s taken me so long to get going on this. I’ve had some really amazing experiences over the years with Couchsurfing but never had a profile of my own. This is a quick write-up until I can put some more time into writing one.
I grew up in Deep Cove, North Vancouver and lived in East Van until a year and a half ago when I moved to Haida Gwaii. I went just to visit but fell in love with the place and the people. I’m treeplanting up there, planting cedar and doing other maintenance throughout the year with cedar trees. I really enjoy hiking, biking, picking chanterelles (is it autumn yet?!) and especially shooting 35mm... & I just picked up my first 120mm/medium format camera... looking forward to learning (trial & error) and fooling around with it.
The plan is to work hard when work is available, explore the islands I now call home and travel as much as possible. I’m really hoping to meet some sweet people through here. I’m a huge believer in the human connection, constantly amazed by the kindness and beauty of others.
Currently spending this summer hitchhiking and wandering around Vancouver Island, The Gulf Islands & Washington. I’ll be heading home sometime in August and would love to start hosting! I spend a lot of time exploring Haida Gwaii and have found some pretty special places I’d be stoked to share. I’ll put some more time into this profile at some point... until then, Haawa (thankyou) for reading and I hope to meet you!

I dump a lot of 35mm photos on Instagram if you feel like being friends over there ~ mossybeaches

Music, Movies, and Books

The Microphones/Mount Eerie, Modest Mouse, Built To Spill, Chad VanGaalen, Angel Olsen, Jason Molina, All Them Witches, Amen Dunes, The Antlers, The Black Angels, Destroyer, Grouper, Karl Blau, Kikagaku Moyo, Neil Young, Nick Drake, Langhorne Slim, Mountain Man... to name a few.

Waking Life is one of my favourites. (I’ll add to this list eventually. )

At the moment I’m reading “Puffin Cove”, an autobiography written in the ‘70s by Neil Carey, stories of his adventures when him and his wife moved from LA up to a remote cove on Haida Gwaii. Currently looking for his wife Betty Carey’s book... her solo dugout canoe trip from Anacortes through the Inside Passage up to Alaska. I’ve been reading mostly autobiographies lately.
