ABOUT ME

Howdy, kids. Like the header says, my name is Austin Dhuyvetter. Born and raised in small-town western North Dakota, I attend the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks on the eastern border of the state. I'm in my fourth year here, studying English Education. I hope to teach grades 9-12 in years to come, probably in the Midwest, but I'm not sure how soon. I wouldn't mind wandering a few years before it happens. Other than school, I spend my time working at a locally-owned and operated grill and bar. It's a pretty cool gig. Working around new and different people daily provides a refreshing variety to the workplace. I like funny things, but you might not think so. You'll figure it out though. I promise. Check out the rest of the profile to learn more I suppose.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I was introduced to Couchsurfing by a good friend. I love the idea of being welcomed into a home whatever the circumstance or situation, so I decided I'd offer my home to others seeking the same. At this point in my life I don't foresee myself crashing on any couches myself, but I think in the very near future that will become a possibility. So for now, I'd more than love to harbor any wayward souls journeying to what they will and hopefully learn something in the process.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've been lucky to have participated in a Voluntourism program in recent years called the Pay it Forward Tour. Quick advert, these Tours are service-based road trips organized by college students and through a Twin Cities-based non-profit called Students Today Leaders Forever (STLF). I hope you Google it, but simply put these Tours consist of 40 students riding a charter bus for a week and half, stopping in six different cities across the nation and sleeping on the floors of any organization or congregation gracious enough to house us without payment. The impact these groups have made in the communities they serve would not be possible without the selfless help of such people as their hosts. My experience with such hospitality is one of the reasons I love the concept of Couchsurfing so much. I think that such generosity of home and comfort can only nurture positive consequences, such or similar, as I have seen on my Pay it Forward Tours.

Interests

Reading, writing, learning, socializing, sketch comedy, movies, slacklining, beer, basketball, music (listening only, sadly I'm not terribly musical, but I can sing a little), singing.

Music, Movies, and Books

I can narrow music down the easiest, so here's that. I listen to a lot of folk artists, with plenty of "indie" artists near the top. I definitely dig some chill new-wave, electronica stuff too though. I'm not against any type of music and am open to any and all suggestions for new bands, artists, or genres. Some music I listen to: Trevor Hall, Bon Iver, Trampled By Turtles, Mumford & Sons, The Avett Brothers, John Butler Trio, Slightly Stoopid, Amos Lee, Alexi Murdoch, The Lumineers, Alt-J, Polica, Silversun Pickups, The Decemberists, Fleet Foxes, Fitz & the Tantrums, The Head and the Heart, Jack White, Horse Feathers, Iron & Wine, The Tallest Man on Earth, Jose Gonzalez, Michael Franti, Radical Face, Sans Souci Quartet, Sufjan Stevens, and others.

Teach, Learn, Share

Gosh, I don't know. You need help writing a paper? I can proofread and maybe offer some writing tips I suppose. As for mooching off my more talented guests, any musical talents you could share would be super fucking cool. I'm not asking you to teach me the guitar in a week, but we could jam a little for sure. If I happened to pick up a helpful tip or two maybe that'd be all the motivation I needed to finally dedicate some time to learning the skill once you've continued on. Let's try that if we can.
