One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

During my third year of medical school, I embarked on a life-altering adventure that forever changed my perspective on life, compassion, and human connection. It all began with a medical mission to Vietnam, an eye-opening experience that exposed me to the stark healthcare disparities in our world and the transformative power of empathy.

Following the mission, I set out on a month-long backpacking odyssey through the enchanting lands of Thailand and Cambodia, driven not only by wanderlust but also by a profound desire to immerse myself in diverse cultures.

In the bustling heart of Bangkok, my journey took an unexpected and profoundly meaningful turn when I connected with an extraordinary individual named Nanna through Couchsurfing. What began as a mere hosting arrangement quickly evolved into a deep and platonic friendship, characterized by our shared passion for cultural exchange and personal growth.

But there was a poignant twist to our story. As our bond deepened, Nanna confided in me about her harrowing battle with stage four terminal breast cancer, her life hanging by the thinnest of threads, with less than a year to live. Her unwavering strength and resilience in the face of this adversity left an indelible mark on my heart.

During one heartfelt conversation, Nanna revealed her final wish – to witness the awe-inspiring splendor of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Though I knew little about this ancient wonder at the time, her dream became my mission.

With determination and a sense of purpose, I researched, planned, and swiftly purchased a plane ticket, extending an invitation to Nanna to join me on a week-long pilgrimage to Angkor Wat.

Upon returning to the United States, life took unexpected turns, including the prospect of fatherhood and a departure from my medical career aspirations. Alongside these changes, another revelation surfaced – a startling truth about a past relationship.

Seven years of intense self-reflection and therapy followed, marking a period of profound transformation and healing. In the midst of this journey, I attempted to reconnect with Nanna through Couchsurfing, hoping to find her once more. Yet, I was met with silence, a poignant reminder of the passage of time.

To this day, Nanna's memory, her unwavering spirit, and the lessons she imparted continue to inspire me. Our shared expedition to Angkor Wat taught me the profound importance of seizing each moment, drawing strength from adversity, and finding inspiration in the most unexpected places.
