I host and surf as much as I can!
It's nice to get a request from someone who has actually read your profile and put at least a little effort into sending you a message...
Couchsurfing is a great way to travel places and get to know locals, not a free hotel service... I have made many amazing friends through couchsurfing so am very thankful for it.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

A few summers ago I spent travelling around Europe with two of my best mates, we would busk in a city for a few days then move on to the next. Two of the best months of my life! And in two months we didn't spend a penny on accommodation... sure we slept outside under the stars a few nights, but every time we needed it, a generous host from couchsurfing would welcome us in their home. We now have great friends to go and see when we go back! :)

I have a few amazing friends who are homeless who I see and briefly chat to when I walk through town. On a few occasions I've received gifts from them (Flask with Coffee in it, guitar tuner,...) even though they have close to nothing to give!
I think the gifts meant "Thank you for treating me as a normal person".
