i used to wing it a lot while traveling - hitch hiking, camping wherever, sleeping in weird places, without knowing where i would be or who i would meet - but honestly i find that traveling is often more meaningful to me when i can build a connection with other people. i like meeting people who live in a place and getting to hear their perspective of what that place is like & recommendations of what to do there.
