Music, Movies, and Books

Literature: I have a soft spot for Tom Robbins (especially Still Life With Woodpecker), Murakami, Hemingway (I have a tattoo from The Sun Also Rises)... I read mostly non-fiction these days with a penchant for texts regarding gender studies, environmentalism, and philosophy. Right now I am halfway through both The World Without Us and The Animal That Therefore I am by Jacques Derrida. The last thing I read that really blew my mind was The Sexual Politics of Meat by Carol Adams.

Movies: I'm a film snob. I hate most brainless mainstream cinema and those movies that play like extended commercials. Due to my profession I see quite a few high-quality independent and foreign films, so I can't help but be picky. Harmony Korine changed my life, and whenever I feel heartbroken I turn to Nights of Cabiria. I don't like happy endings, but loose strings that lead to days of thought and conversation. Don't get me wrong, I love the occasional B-movie and most films people consider "fucked up."

Shows: I don't own a TV. Instead, my apartment has a "lamp room," a sitting area with 3 floor lamps and about 7 desk lamps.

Music: I love listening to the radio on scan. Also, I have developed the perfect Pandora mix. In there you may find: Aesop Rock, Santogold, Tegan and Sara, Mount Kimbie, Peter Bjorn and John, Squarepusher, Fourtet, Chromeo, RJD2, Fugees (and Lauryn Hill of course), Royksopp, Ginuwine, Justice, Flux Pavilion (sometimes), Phoenix, Mum, Blackstreet, Animal Collective (and their side projects), CocoRosie, DeadMau5, Michael Jackson, Wax Tailor, Ratatat, Crystal Castles, Salt N Pepa... I'm all over the place. A playful mix of electronic, hip hop, and 90's nostalgia? And I'm not-so-secretly in love with James Blake. Oh, and I love drum & bass.
