I read "The Beach" on a train once when in Thailand, which was the perfect combination.

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

Story time! Here we go. So there's an island, about 3 hours off of the east coast of thailand, called Koh Tao. On that island, if you rent a Honda Click and take it off-roading over the cliffs of the island (not recommended, but totally recommended) you can find a bay called Tanote Bay. And inside that bay there is a giant boulder that protrudes above a lot of other rocks and coral.

So there I am, in the middle of nowhere, hours away from any decent medical care, standing on the rocks at the base of this giant boulder, with a rope in my hand, that is somehow attached to the top of the giant boulder. I start climbing, because what else would you do, using the rope for a bit of assistance here or there. Eventually, I get to a point, probably a good 6 or 7 meters above the nearest rock, that the giant boulder goes smooth. I have two options: go back down, or put all of my weight into the rope and use it to slowly walk up the rest of this boulder.

Now I'm about 2 meters tall and 90 kilos, and this rope of suffering some serious ocean damage, and I have no idea what it's connected to on the top of the giant boulder. Below me there are a bunch of Swedish and Canadian people, half of them were calling me crazy telling me to get down, the other half egging me on. I stood there, on the last foot hold, for what felt like a few good minutes before I decided what to do. On the one hand, if I fell, the rest of my trip was ruined on the off chance I survive. However, on the other hand, I would literally never have this opportunity in my life again, and if I went down, I knew it would bother me until I came back and took that leap of faith.

So I put two feet against the rock, and leaned back, completely perpendicular above a bunch of rocks and coral, walked my way up that fucking rock, and jumped off the other side into the ocean and have never felt more dazed and amazed.
