About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I'm living in a culture bubble. Please help me pop it.

ABOUT ME

Attempt number 5. Whatever I write here, I shall keep, for now.

Tall, kinda scruffy, I'm more of a book (or let's be honest, internet) kind of guy. That doesn't mean I won't go out hiking, or walking through town with a friend; but it does mean that I'm more of a social doer: without reason to go out, I'm happy to play guitar (badly), or piano (not as badly), or pursue my goal to master computer programming. For an Alaskan, I am pretty strange: I hate the summers, love the winters; don't own dogs; and don't vote republican.

I know it says "All about you", but I'd like to leave some of it for discussions, preferably over a nice drink.

PHILOSOPHY

Life is better than it has ever been before in all of human history. And despite all the bad news, it's getting better.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I joined back when I bought a house, but then it got a bit cramped and I decided to hold off. So technically I'm new at this.

Interests

Introverted interests: reading, binge-watching good tv shows, playing piano and guitar alone, computer gaming and programming.
Extroverted interests: talking, joking around, making fun of movies, bocce, wandering around town (while talking, of course), going out to dinner, sometimes hiking, going to the pub, education.

Be warned: I have strong opinions on many topics, and will talk for hours about things like math, evolution, religion, life extension, cryonics, Artificial Intelligence, practical philosophy, general science, and AD&D to name a few.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I went on a walk one winter, very late at night. I think I was angry about something and was trying to blow off steam. I ended up at the lookout on a small hill, when a ring of pillars of light formed directly above my head. They were many different colors, but glowed very brightly white. I know they were just the aurora, but I couldn't help but feeling as if the whole pantheon of Norse gods was looking down at me, telling me to calm the hell down. It was beautiful.

Teach, Learn, Share

I have a passion for math that I am always happy to share. That is, I love to share the passion AND the math.

I love sharing my esoteric computer quirks. Maybe there's something we can trade there.

While I'm not an expert, I have spent a lot of time thinking about the philosophy of religion, science, and knowledge. I think I can give you an acceptable rendition of the Deduction of Evolution by Natural Selection on a bar napkin, if given the chance.
