Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have surfed in the past and made some good friends through the community. It has been a while since I have been to a local Chicago group meeting, but I hope to get more involved. I have been living on a boat for a while now, but soon hope to host people in my apartment (I have one of those now!) when I return from my winter travels.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have done a great deal of "couchsurfing" with friends over the years, and found out about this actual site from friends when I planned to travel to England. I didn't actually couchsurf there, funnily enough, because I knew a friend there, but since then I have been a big advocate of the community here. I have couchsurfed in Chicago since then when I was between seasons (living and working on a boat in the summer months), and hope to be a host in the near future now that I am able.

Music, Movies, and Books

I adore both the original 1950'w Gojira and the 1951 American recut, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, for different reasons. My favorite movie is Come and See, if you get Netflix delivered then I highly recommend it (but you will have to brace yourself). Martin Scorcese's Hugo is a very close second (go see it right now, no matter what). Also, anything by Charlie Chaplin, especially The Great Dictator.

I really adore folk punk like Andrew Jackson Jihad, Gogol Bordello, Frank Turner. Great Big Sea and anybody who does a modern take on traditional song. But I have really eclectic taste, from Tchaikovsky to Nick Cave to Led Zeppelin. Suggestions for new groups to check out are always welcome!

As of recently, I can claim to have read all of Shakespeare's plays (with the arguable exception of Edward III, which may or may not be a collaboration between him and Kyd). Mark Twain is my personal hero, and my favorite book is Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Living on a 4-masted schooner on Navy Pier for the summer, working as a storyteller and crew, for 4 years now. Lived on a pirate ship. You're welcome, 8 year old version of me.

Just finished a transit around Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Erie, and participated in the bicentennial naval battle reenactment of The Battle of Lake Erie. My ship played the Lawrence, the most badass ship in the fleet. An estimated 2000 ships gathered to watch, plus 15 tall ships participating. It was epic.

Teach, Learn, Share

Lake Huron and lake Michigan are actually one lake, joined by the 5-mile wide Strait of Mackinac (which I've sailed through, it's beautiful!)
