- The statue of Christ, the Redeemer, was elected one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

- Copacabana beach was elected by the 5 million viewers of the site AskMen, as the most beautiful beach in the world.

- Scientists of NPL's Optical radiation measurement team, led by Dr Nigel Fox, have ensured that Expedia's blue sky explorer, Anya, was able to observe the world's best blue sky and unequivocally assign a set of internationally accepted colorimetric coordinates so that it can be fully defined.The city chosen among 19 competitors, in six continents was Rio de Janeiro.

- Definitive headquarters of the ABAV Congress and Exhibition, in Riocentro which was established as the biggest and best Conventions Center in South America.

- The city of Rio was chosen, in a research carried out in two American universities â
