ABOUT ME

We Burnetts have a unique way of looking at life: We laugh hard, we fight loud, we play hard, and we embrace life for the grand adventure that it is. We’re definitely an outside of the box kind of people.

We try to celebrate the similarities – and differences- in each other, and love each other more because of them (even though living this out can sometimes prove to be more challenging than we may have thought!!! ;)

We’re a relatively new family – Adam and I only having been married a little over 7 years, with two young boys: Goku, 6, and Xavier, 2.

We feel so blessed to have the opportunities that many other families with older children don’t have, and that is the freedom to live above what society deems as proper and normal.

We are definitely NOT a normal suburban family by most definitions: that is, we haven’t enrolled our kids in a rigid schedule of soccer practices or music lessons or anything else that would hinder this moment of our lives.

And what moment would that be, you ask?

Well, due to a recent turn of events, we will be rendered homeless in a matter of just two weeks.

We are facing the ultimate in devastating blows to a family: the concept that we will be taking our place among the growing numbers of homeless families here in the United States.

And to make things worse, the economy (specifically here in the Houston/Galveston area) is in relative shambles, having been decimated over the past few years by some pretty powerful hurricanes (first the Katrina/Rita combo where we lost our home to a 200 year old cottonwood tree, then with Ike, who pretty much flooded anything south of I-10… which is where we lived…,) government bailouts of our nation’s largest and most profitable corporations, and an inflation rate that is causing many people to have to declare bankruptcy.

Here in Houston, jobs are scarce, businesses are struggling, and the housing market is even tougher than what the media is letting on. People are having a harder time getting by, and it’s getting worse every month.

So, with no savings to speak of, and nowhere realistic to go, we had a choice to make: where do we go from here? Do we hit a shelter? Swallow our pride, and (gulp) move back in with our parents (we love you Mom and Dad, but….. no.)

So, we thought on it.

We prayed on it.

We asked for advice, but nothing we were hearing seemed right; the advice we were getting from our friends and family, though sound and reasonable, just didn’t ring well either. As a family of four, nothing we heard was good enough.

There had to be another option…

and so here we are!

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Participation for now has to be limited to utilizing this awesome system and giving detailed ratings of all the people who host us. Our trip consists of constant blogging and video of the entire experience, so couchsurfing will definitely be getting a lot of publicity!!!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

In the past, I (Eileen) have done something similar in Europe, where I met a lot of really cool families and stayed at a number of different homes. Some took me sightseeing, some offered me a room, but all left me with a greater appreciation for mankind as a whole... that there are good-hearted, REAL people out there who care enough about life to extend an arm of friendship to a total stranger.

And that gives me hope for all of us.
