About Me

High school history teacher, lover of learning, holder of a Masters in History and a Masters in Education, at home in the front of a classroom, married, father of three fantastic human beings (we did something right), maintain my political sanity by remembering that Charles Sumner was beaten on the floor of the US Senate within an inch of his life by Preston Brooks in 1856. Sumner at least got a tunnel named after him in Boston. It goes to show thing today could be worse today.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I have come to a crossroads in my life and I am embarking on a journey of later life discovery. I am the 'established' guy. Wife, three grown children, dog, house, cars, yada yada yada. This is all wonderful. My life has been full of love and happiness but I haven't satisfied a piece of my adventurous soul. The 25 year old who hitch hiked around the country and followed the Grateful Dead from show to show needs to come back for a visit.

Music, Movies, and Books

I primarily like classic rock with a little reggae, jazz and classical thrown in. I cannot not name a favorite book because I love so many.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

One amazing thing that I am happy to repeat annually is my special way to travel. In order to combine my love of teaching with my love of travel, I host 12-14 year old students on a trip every April to somewhere in the world. For every six paying students who travel with me, one adult chaperone travels for free. This includes plane fare, hotel, 2 meals a day, admission to all major sites and a 24/7 tour guide.

There are two factors that make this a wonderful experience. I would never be able to go to so many different places for that price (FREE). As a teacher it is extra special to see the world through the eyes and, even at 12-14, the wonder of kids. Of course, free is not ever really free. The responsibility is huge. I always have my 'teacher' hat on and the rules are set early. Kids will rise to the occasion if you set the expectation and then treat them as adults whenever possible. The growth that they show in 9-11 days can be more than a year in the classroom.

Countries I’ve Visited

Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Ecuador, France, Italy, Monaco, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Vatican City State, Virgin Islands, U.S.
