I grew up in Michigan (which is pretty boring) and majored in Sign Language Studies and Deaf Culture Studies in college (which is an odd thing to do). I thought I wanted to be an interpreter, but then changed my mind and moved to Chicago to be a teacher. I've now lived in Chicago since 2012 and I love it here. Chicago has great storefront theaters, and plenty of street art and quirky tech events to keep me occupied. Being a teacher gives me a lot of time to travel in the summer and on holidays, so I take advantage of that and go out of the country frequently.

Like many people on here, I appreciate staying with people who know the area well when I travel. It makes for a much more interesting experience than staying at a hotel or hostel and doing touristy things. Life is about meeting and interacting with people and learning all you can from people who are different from you--I think this is an excellent venue for that type of exploration.
