About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To sit still just long enough to finish my Ph.D. dissertation.

ABOUT ME

I'm a musician specializing in historical performance. I'm interested in improvisation, but also in understanding how people might have thought about music and about themselves 500 years ago.

PHILOSOPHY

I think happiness is about a sense of connection to the people and the world around us.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I've been both a host and a guest, in Basel and Montreal, and now in Banbury, England.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've had some really positive experiences both hosting and surfing. I enjoy the spontaneity of it and meeting people from different walks of life.

Interests

I think it's Tolkien who said that everyone is either a mountains person or a sea person, but I am constantly torn between the two. The feeling of being on the sea in a kayak is one of the most exhilarating, but looking out over the Hebrides from the top of Ladhar Bheinn (Knoydart peninsula, Scotland) has formed an indelible memory in my mind.

I am a bit of a foodie, but company is more important than food in the end.

DIY: More specifically, I have fantasies about building treehouses.

Music, Movies, and Books

MOVIES
Period dramas but I do like the occasional explosion.

MUSIC
Folk music from Scotland, Ireland, Cape Breton
60's singer/songwriters
I play baroque and classical music for a living

BOOKS
Reading lots of dense articles about Ancient and Renaissance philosophy at the moment.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCTwjL_TQXfJS3KnynTlRpDg

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach how to improvise music with another person, and let you try a sackbut. I cook a few speciality dishes, like lamb curry, oatcakes, pumpkin pie, and risotto, and love cooking in company.

I'm interested in learning many things: some more Italian, some basic Spanish, how to garden, how to build things. I'd like to learn more about how the human body works and how best to take care of it.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can show you Banbury—an underrated town, even by its residents, and if I have time I can show you around Oxford a bit too.

Countries I’ve Lived In

Canada, Switzerland, United Kingdom
