About Me

I’m curious about others' perspectives and ways of being.

I work for a public university doing research as part of an effort to divert people with mental and behavioral illnesses from the carceral system and improve access to harm reduction services and to non law enforcement crisis response services.

I’m motivated by new experiences, running long distances, dancing, multi day backpacking trips, skipping stones, singing with others, drawing faces and bodies, a good dunk in the water.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm not particularly extraverted, but I do see value in sharing space, materials, and live engagement with each other rather than defaulting to the impersonal, transactional.
A long time ago I read something, whose author I now forget, which said something like "friendship happens in the time between gifts.”

I've had a lot of good experiences with strangers.

Interests

At the moment I'm thinking about participatory action research as research/philosophy praxis, about pain and different types of pain, about patience and expectation. Why do we enjoy a song we like when it's on the radio more than we enjoy it on demand?

I love distance running. Especially trail. I love giving amateur physical therapy advice.

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm reading a book that a high school classmate recently published called Work Nights and a biography of Marx by Isaiah Berlin. My fav writings so far are from Woolf, Sontag, Dillard, Didion. I’m into writing that feels like it captures something about the time it was written in, in a realist way. I also love to read aloud to people and to be read to.
I play cello with friends, working on Brahm's Cello Sonata No.1 in E minor.
I got a lot out of Bresson's Diary of a Country Priest, Tarkovsky's Stalker, Carne's Children of Paradise, would recommend those to anyone. I'm a sucker for the pacing and the sad, intense longing. I love that Bresson doesn't like to use actors. A lot of good cinema is still very new/unknown to me, which is good news for me.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I helped run a temporary shelter (a Catholic Worker house of hospitality), lived there for about 2 years providing hospitality to unhoused people

Teach, Learn, Share

I could teach you how to knit, play cello, speak some German, create a map on mapping software, create a running training plan, dip beeswax candles, teach you a new song.
