About Me

TLDR and more; I'm pretty excitable but am all about communication so if you need chill just tell me to. I'm a rather physical person so I like to move and dance and hug. Also, food is the best. I'll try almost everything at least once, and I'm bad at summarizing so if I missed anything, well. Whatever. Meet me in real life and then all this will be moot!

"About Me" sections are the elevator pitches of the internet. I honestly find them terrifying. I mean, I'm GREAT at filling out lists, so why can't the profile sections just be more robust?! Logically I understand why, but I never scored particularly well on any written exams when I was still in school. But in all seriousness..

Who, How, and What is a Char?
Bravo, great questions! It's thinking like this that is pushing our world further into wild and new endeavors! I am Char. Well, I am a Char. There are plenty of other Char's out and about, but in the context of you reading this, I AM THE ONLY CHAR THAT MATTERS. You're undivided attention is appreciated. Thanks.

I was born in the US to some pretty rad parents. They were a very supportive couple - OR SO I THOUGHT. In adulthood I later learned that it was their plan all along for me to end up in science or engineering. You know, a "good, solid career." I was shocked. Flabbergasted, really. I thought I could grow up to be anything I wanted, but they pigeon holed me into thinking "anything" did not include "lottery winner," or "con artist," or even "circus performer." But jokes on them, and even though I never won the lottery or successfully conned anyone, I am in LOVE with aerial hoop and pole dancing (Plus it's a great work out). Those bruises I have on my arms and legs? No, my boyfriend isn't beating me, I just constantly ram myself into steel apparatuses on the regular. I'm an adult and I make my own decisions!

I'm incredibly bad at social media. I think I'm an old person (What is this.. TWEETER??). I find myself asking a lot of questions my parents used to ask me about the inter webs. Half of me is upset but the other half of me is really excited about this. Sure my parents are great, but what's the best part about them? They're old. And you know what's socially acceptable for old people to be? CRAZY. I can't want to be a crazy old asian lady just rambling and yelling nonsense at passerby's. "Oh, did she tell you the shoes in the lake were backwards and needed to be filed? Yeah. That's crazy old granny Char for you!"
Because of this, I have two instagram accounts. The first one is pretty much exclusively pictures of food my friends and I made, but I quickly forgot the password to that account and now it lives in limbo. The new one I think I still have access to...

Being bad at social media doesn't mean I'm bad at social situations tho! In person, I'm a real 8/10 gal! I won't try to oversell myself, but I'd like to think I'm a real character. I'm all about that friendship. You in the mood to chat? Me too! You wanna be in a quiet zone? I can flux with that. My general mood is between "THIS IS THE COOLEST THING EVER" and "I guess I don't care that much so I'm not gonna be poo poo on your party". Is that a big range? It can be, but I'm really about having a good time with people so I try not to take things too seriously. In the end, I just want my presence to bring people up a level, whether that means from 0 to 1 or from 10 to OVER 9000!

I'm very into doing anything at least once. You got food recommendations? Let's do it. Your favorite activity? Sign me up!

Looking at how long I made this.. Maybe I should start a blog..

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

As a kid I travelled most summers to visit family in Taiwan, and as I got older I got pretty tired of the "touristy" stuff. First thing I really want to do is honestly visit a grocery store and check out the snack collection. Site seeing comes after that. Food and friends #1.

I just wanna meet a bunch of people all over and have a good network to always chat with no matter the time of day! More importantly I want an excuse to go see people. You live a few cities over? Well I can go see you whenever. But you live HALF WAY ACROSS THE GLOBE? I gotta buy plane tickets to make plans now! Being around different people, cultures, and so on keeps my brain fresh! Forces me to always think in a new light, and honestly just makes me a better person. So please! Help me be a better person and chat me up!

Music, Movies, and Books

Oh what a difficult topic for me to broach. My music tastes change so regularly like the fish in the ocean, but that might not be a good comparison I know nothing about fish. I love me some of that Indie pop, and also can get down with some electro vibes. I can sing and dance all day to some slow mellow tunes and be lyrical and contemporary. I'll get behind those top chart pop songs too. Really, anything that gets me moving! Music is a spectrum, but I guess if you want a list my top artists for the spring of 2017 are Die Antwoord, Halsey, Purity Ring, Lorde, Jaymes Young, Arctic Monkeys, Alabama Shake.. the list goes on and on! I'm up for new recommendations too!

I've never been super big on visual media strangely enough. The last movie I saw was La La Land, and before that Rogue One. I'm not against them, I just can't be bothered to watch something unless I get dragged into watching it. I'll enjoy it, don't get me wrong, it just takes me more effort than the normal human to want to do it. I don't even use youtube or Netflix that often. But no worries, I sit down with friends to watch whatever they're watching all the time if that's what they enjoy, and I always have a good time too!

My favorite books are Tipping Point and Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. They're rather well written and I thought they had such an interesting take! Super recommend, and that means a lot since I don't get a chance to read many books.
That being said, I HAVE read and LOVE all (or at least most) of the Song of Ice and Fire series that has come out (that's the Game of Thrones books for you sillies who've only ever watched the show!). Weirdly enough I never got into Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter - I know I know, whenever it comes up that I'm not a Harry Potter fan people give me weird looks of either pity or disgust and I apologize for having offended them so deeply. However, I did read a book once called The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon and that left me with some pretty good feels.
But really. Fight Club.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Burst into strangers' karaoke rooms and forced them to sing with me. I think they enjoyed it more than not. It was all-night-all-you-can-drink karaoke so the only feelings people were having were good.

Teach, Learn, Share

I have a rather laissez personality so my stress levels are pretty low. Things'll usually turn out for the better if you don't freak out and just take it as it comes. I've had friends tell me that hanging out with them helps them calm down a lot. Life can get rough at times, but whether we're young or old, if we take it step by step and don't do anything too stupid, in most cases we can always bounce back. I got your back, friend!

What I Can Share with Hosts

My toothbrush? I'd rather not, but if you really need it I'm willing to share. I mean, you're sharing your home so that's honestly the least I can do.

But really, I'm a very reactive person so whatever a person needs out of me I think I'm pretty good at giving. Need a friend to rant with? You got my ear. Need an excuse to go to a fancy restaurant? My stomach is ready. Want to hear some weird stories about strangers? I have a couple good ones in my arsenal.

If you're willing to share with me, then I really want to do my part and give back too.

If my charming personality isn't enough to give you a good time full of laughs then we'll just have to figure something out!
