CURRENT MISSION

Island hopping and pushing my limits. Currently amidst a WWOOFing extravaganza that began in Hawaii, continued on to New Zealand, and will finish in Australia (orrrr perhaps we'll continue on to other islands...Indonesia? Philipines? Who knows!!)

ABOUT ME

Blaaaah. I like to say that I despise narcissists, but I think everyone has a bit of narcissism in them...it's definitely necessary for writing this kind of blurp. Anywho, I've lived in Oregon most of my life and up until recently, it was my favorite place on earth. Now that I'm (finally) traveling around, I've realized that maaaaybe other places can live up to my high standards! For those who don't know much about Oregon: it's sooooo green all the time! (Thanks, Doug Fir trees!) People are pretty environmentally conscious there and enjoy their outdoor activities. In other words, it's sorta a Utopia. I am VERY passionate/scarily opinionated at times about preserving this planet that we occupy, which is why after 3 years of studying Nutrition at OSU, decided, "eh, fuck it" and changed my major to Environmental Science (even though it meant an extra year...ughh). I learned a lot in school, but now that I'm traveling, I've realized that there is so much more to learn from the world (and other people). Life is one crazy adventure!

On a lighter, more random note: You've probably noticed that I love parentheses. They are stupendous. I like to make up absurd expressions because I get bored with, "Holy Cow!" and "Geeeeeeze Louise, Martha!" (although I also use these a lot). I go on mini-rants fairly regularly (about nothing in particular), but don't really expect anyone to listen. I think I just like to talk....to myself...but I'm pretty sure I'm not crazy. Bahahaha. I really enjoy nerdy people; no particular type of nerd, just nerds of all sorts. The only sport I've ever succesfully participated in is racquetball, or what most people refer to as, "the old man sport". Fun fact: In college, I played on my school's racquetball team and we won the National title all 4 years. I bet you didn't even know racquetball existed, let alone that there's a national tournament! I really enjoy attempting to play musical instruments, with varied success. I play violin and viola primarily, but have been learning the ukulele for a few months!!

PHILOSOPHY

This earth does not belong to us; we basically rent our space through conscientious stewardship of the land and critters. With that said, we (the human race as a whole) are on the verge of eviction (aka, doing a terrible job). We are all at fault, no matter how "sustainable" a life we think we are living, and should strive everyday to try a little harder to preserve everything this amazing planet has to offer! At the same time, however, it is crucial to enjoy the short time we have here and pursue what truly fulfills us (no matter what other people think).

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

So far I've primarily surfed, as I am currently homeless by choice, or what others may call WWOOFing. As soon as I have a home, I will for suuuuuure host because since realizing the joys of couchsurfing, I am convinced that there is no better way to travel. Meet awesome random people and randomly awesome people while helping eachother travel inexpensively? Yesssssss, puuulease!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Since beginning our island WWOOFing crusade, Val and I have surfed in Honolulu, HI (where we stayed with some pretty stellar Marine dudes (Joe and Oliver) as well as a reaaaaaally nice guy (Lee) who had a fever, but still went out of his way to make our stay comfortable) and Haleiwa, HI (where we stayed with some amazing ladies and some sweet skydiving guys)

Hiking, playing my instruments, playing other people's instruments (if they let me, of course), reading, attempting to write songs, learning about permaculture and sustainable living, gardening, farming, frolicking in the sunshine, yoga, talking to neat people, annnnnnnnnnnnnd much more!

If I ever come across a Genie and he/she graciously offers me a wish, I would wish for life to have a soundtrack. Music is a universal language. I have never been super aggresive with seeking out music. Instead, I let it come to me (aka let those whose opinions I trust, suggest music to me). This way, I don't have to do all the digging, and get to expedite my music enjoyment. I really enjoy classical, old jazz, 20's era, indie rock, and a whole lot of other randomness.

Since graduating college, I've gotten suuuuper into reading. I'm apparently a little ADD and just can't focus on assigned reading and recreational reading at the same time. Authors that hold a special place in my heart are Kurt Vonnegut Jr, Haruki Murakami, and Jonathan Safran Foer (although I haven't yet finished any of his books....did I mention I am easily distracted?)

Movies are great, although I try to tune out and spend most of my time enjoying nature, hanging out with awesome people, reading, and playing music. I typically prefer absurd, eccentric films, especially Wes Anderson. If I ever find that Genie and he/she grants me another wish, my second wish would be for life to be a Wes Anderson film. Yesss that would be splendid.

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

One night in Mexico, I was stumbling along the beach and almost tumbled into what I thought was a large rock. . . However, upon closer inspection, I came to the realization that it was actually an enormous turtle! Pretty fantastic.
