About Me
Batheay English School (BES)
Batheay English School gives the children from Batheay district an opportunity to learn English and Khmer language. Our focus is education for all - children from the families that cannot afford a small fee of 4 USD for 50 hours of lessons needed to pay salary to five our teachers study English and Khmer for free.
My background
When I was a young boy, I had to work very hard at my farm. Every morning I went to school and after I had to herd cows and bulls. While I was in the fields with cows and bulls, I always brought books and fishing net with me. The fishing net was used to fish in the river and I also picked up vegetables such as water lily, flowers of water hyacinth, water convolvulus. My mother sold them at the market to earn some money and support my studies. I always did so until I became a teacher of English in a lower secondary school. But even then I didn't give up studying, although I had to teach students from 6 am till 6 pm. Every weekend I went to Phnom Penh to study English literature at the university. In 2014 I successfully passed the exams for the Bachelor's degree to be a teacher in state schools.
I've always desired to do more to educate children in my community. My dream became reality when with the support of my family I built my own school of English and Khmer languages in the house where I live together with my parents and the families of my sisters and brothers.Working hard together with 5 other teachers, we were able to borrow money from the bank to buy building materials and a van for students transportation to also provide an opportunity to learn for the children, who live far from our village.
Today we developed our school to accommodate more than 200 children from Batheay district of all ages in five rooms. We work from Monday to Saturday providing students with both morning and afternoon lessons in English and Khmer language even during the breaks from the state school.
How you can help
Although Batheay village is only in 60 km from Phnom Penh, we don't have any conventional sights that tourists visit in Cambodia and our students here don't have a chance to practice their English with a foreigner. Education is our chance to break the cycle of poverty - we really need your help in teaching our students both reading and speaking as well as writing and listening in English. We can offer you much more than just a sightseeing - an experience of living naturally in our community as a local!
For those who are considering visiting and come along national road 7A to Siem Reap and interested in helping, please come and be a volunteer teacher with our lovely and friendly students who are always eager to study with foreigners who can speak English.
