About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To travel the world and inspire others to do the same through my photography!

ABOUT ME

I grew up in the Midwest and no matter how far from home I go I will always carry the ethic of kindness, reciprocation, and humanism that was instilled in me.

One of my first true passions was snowboarding, and I've held onto that and I continue to push myself to experience more and more of what's possible on a snowboard - not just in the air, but in the mountains as well.

In high school I was introduced to photography, and like snowboarding, I found a passion. Alongside snowboarding, I've focused my life thus far on pushing myself to explore the world through both of these passions.

I have had some moderate success in photography - mostly awards and random freelance gigs until recently when two of my photographs were featured in AP27 - an annual 'best of' juried by editors of Rolling Stone, Fast Company, NYT, Glamour, People, and powerHouse books.

This is just the beginning though, and I'm anxious to explore the world through my lens.

Besides all that, I love music even though I've never been able to fully pick up any instruments. You can get a feel for what I like here: last.fm/user/chrisdthompson

PHILOSOPHY

I live with risk, but never recklessness. Those who never take a risk, never reap the rewards of unexpected pleasure. I savor my failures almost as much as my successes, since they teach me more. I try to be as interested as I possibly can, and see the world from as many perspectives as possible.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I first joined CS back around a year and a half ago when I was interning in Colorado - I had joined to meet some cool people, but was immediately distracted by people I had met at work and roommates. I'd love to participate more fully in the CS community going forward!

Music, Movies, and Books

As I said above, I love music (who doesn't?) From Tom Waits to GZA and back (last.fm/user/christhompson if you're curious about the 'between').

Vonnegut, Eggers, Huxley, Krakauer,
Kubrick, Leone, Coen Brothers, Hughes.
In the last year I've liked Drive, Black Swan,

But also, the dumber the comedy the better, thus, Dumb and Dumber is one of my favorites. I'll quote half that movie on command.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Some of the most amazing things I have seen have either been out in raw nature, or in the best museums in the world. I have a hard time picking between those two places of amazement as more or less reliable or spectacular.

A mild accomplishment, but driving solo across the US has been a mile marker for many different eras of my life. It seems like it starts and ends many different chapters.

Snowboarding glaciers in British Columbia and Oregon are also highlights for me.

I've had a few near-death experiences, and I'd be happy to recount them.

I've also delivered pizza in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the country, and that has netted me a number of interesting stories as well.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm always happy to share my photography opinions/knowhow or teach a snowboard lesson.

I'd really love to learn to drive a stick shift, fly a plane, ride a motorcycle, learn backcountry skiing/snowboarding/camping stuff. Cooking is also an area of interest that I've so far avoided because my stomach is typically inpatient.
