About Me

I'm a tutor, a bodyworker in training, a yoga and kung fu instructor, and a dad. I love experiencing the outdoors, studying old Latin poetry, and learning new ways of moving my body. I love good food and trying new things to eat, and I generally am a huge fan of experiences that expand our worldview and learn about other people and ways of life.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

In a former life, I lived as a Mormon missionary in Norway for two years. I absolutely loved parts of my experience, but there were also some ways in which I felt really cut off from the local experience. We had all kinds of rules to follow, we lived by ourselves, and we kept a very strict schedule. When I came home, I realized that in many ways I'd been insulated from the real experience of being in a foreign country and from the real ways in which it can change you.

I am on Couchsurfing to broaden my horizons, to meet new people, and to learn what it's actually like to live in different places.

Music, Movies, and Books

So, pretty geeky, but I love a lot of old video game music, especially from old RPGs like Chrono Trigger. Also enjoy classical music (Rachmaninoff and Bach are my favorites) and the right choral music can make me literally shiver. My modern music tastes are really eclectic, but I have a huge soft spot for George Michael.

In terms of reading, I read a lot of poetry these days. I enjoy English authors like John Donne, George Herbert, and (to the extent that they count) works like Sir Gawain and Beowulf. I have also been reading a lot of Latin love poetry lately by authors like Catullus and Propertius. One of my favorite living authors is Thomas Moore. His books on soul are fantastic.

One of my favorite things going on in movies right now is the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although my personal opinion is that it hit its high mark with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Recently some of their movies have felt a little unfocused and bloated (although still enjoyable), and I hope they can get back to a trimmer, more tightly plotted style.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I once swam in a cage with sharks during a minor feeding frenzy.

Teach, Learn, Share

If you're interested in practicing English, learning a bit of Latin, or need some editing done, I've got your back. I also am a kung fu instructor, yoga instructor, personal trainer, and movement instructor. If you want to learn anything about those or just get some practice moving together, I'm game. :)

I'm also a practitioner in training in the Rolf Method of Structural Integration. I would be happy to share a session of bodywork with hosts as well.

I would love to learn more about dance, cooking, local culture, and anything else you can share with me. I would love it if you could show me some spots only the locals know about or take me on some hikes around the area.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I'm relaxed, easygoing, and nonjudgmental. I clean up well after myself, and I would be happy to help with cooking wherever I end up staying. I'm also good at being quiet when it's time to sleep. :)
