About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Exploring as much of the world as possible!

ABOUT ME

23 year old British male, got the travelling bug visiting and volunteering in Brazil in 2013. Worked for a year as a travel agent in the UK then got bored of booking other people's holidays so quit and flew to California, then NZ and then to Melbourne.

Did a years working holiday, mostly in Melbourne but also spent a solid 3 months doing some manual labour in Tassie! Traveled South East Asia extensively to put of returning home, Singapore, Malaysia, The Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia and HK. Suffered a long cold 8 months back at home still working in travel before quitting all again (I half blame BREXIT) and now on my way back to Australia visa Thailand and Myanmar! Ive ticked off most of my original bucket list, things like skydiving, bunjee, riding a horse, getting a tattoo, learning to ride a scooter,

I try to keep up a blog about my adventures, although the actual adventuring does take precedence! Love diving and try to do some everywhere I can, still need to make it up to the GBR though!

Im pretty laid back and am equally happy spending all day out doing activities as I am staying in all day and watching awful tele. I consider myself pretty sociable and fun to hang out with too, I love a good glass (or bottle) of wine or a well made G&T and a good chat!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

In any new city, my habit is to walk around until my feet are about to fall off. I generally go without a map and without any clue about what there is to see and it generally helps me not only get my bearings (although you cant beat getting hopelessly lost sometimes!) and discover neighbourhoods that I'd otherwise have never found. If someone could narrow that down for me or provide company on my walk that would be greatly appreciated!

I have only couch surfed once (in Australia) and unfortunately haven't been in a position to offer my couch out but I think its an incredible platform for travellers particularly solo ones to have authentic experiences. Being is hostels is great for socialising but you don't always get the best out of a destination being with other people in the same position. Its great to get a locals perspective and opinion of their home city, along with all its little hidden secrets that don't appear in any guidebooks!

Interests

Travelling obviously! I use it mostly as an escape from the monotony of the 9-5 office jobs Ive had at home. Its especially helpful at distracting myself from the fact I have no real idea of what I want to do long term!

I write a blog about my adventures (at britboyabroad.wordpress.com) and document almost everything on my Instagram. Currently in the process of building a website to expand my blog into something a bit more credible, that could potentially fund future travel. The actually adventures (and wifi quality) do hinder this somewhat though.

I did my Open Water dive course in October 2015 on a bit of a whim (although it has always been on my bucket list) in the Perhentian Island in Malaysia. It was hands down one of the best things Ive ever done and loved it so much I completed my Advanced Qualification 12 months later in Koh Tao, Thailand.

I was quite committed to keeping fit while I was based back home for a bit and while my travels have put that on hold for a bit, its still something Im interested in taking back up.

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm not too fussy, anything that can hold my attention really, cant beat a good animation and Disney singalong! Almost anything with Melissa McCarthy or Kristen Wiig in and always fancied myself a bit of a superhero.

Bit of a wimp so I don't like watching horror films much, I was forced to watch The Exorcist at Uni and slept with the lights on after!

Ive just finished reading the Game Of Thrones books after binge watching 5 series in 5 weeks late last year. It was agony to wait a whole 7 days between episodes for Season 6! I'll re-read Harry Potter over and over but do love a good spy or detective novel to get stuck into. I do actually read a lot of text regarding my degree interest of the environment and the issues the planet is facing, mostly I get this online but I will always try and find books about it too.

Im terrible at remembering song titles and artists so I mainly just listen to popular radio stations but I would never say no to a recommendation for my somewhat small spotify playlists! I saw CHVRCHES live earlier this year and they were pretty amazing and I'd love to see Sia. Put me straight down for a festival though! I struggle to get to them as much as I'd like as I never know when Im going to be in the right country!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

So many to choose from, I think favourites single experiences have been skydiving in Queenstown, NZ. I had absolutely perfect weather and as soon as my feet hot the ground I wanted to go straight back up and jump again! Also have loved many of my scuba dives, particular highlights though was my entire Open Water Course in Perhentian, Malaysia.

I had an incredible time in the southern Brazilian state of Parana, volunteering at Universidade Estadual de Maringá. Along with 3 other international interns we organised and ran English Language workshops for over 100 students over 3 months. It was hands-down one of the most rewarding things Ive ever down!

Im pretty proud of surviving three years at University in Leeds too!

Teach, Learn, Share

I keep meaning to take up a language, or restart learning one! I did 5 years of French and 3 of Spanish at school but I could barely string a conversation together now ashamedly! Once I'm a bit more settled I'd like to give it a lot more time and energy so any informal lessons would be much appreciated!

What I Can Share with Hosts

Unfortunately I haven't been in a position to host myself since I joined, however I do have a big love of food! I'm a pretty decent baker when I put my mind to it and make some mean chocolate brownies!
