About Me

CURRENT MISSION

to learn about the world while exploring it on bicycles and boats

ABOUT ME

I'm a grad student studying the marine carbon cycle, past and present. I use radiocarbon (the same isotope that is used for carbon dating) to track the flow of carbon between oceans, the atmosphere, fossil fuels and all living things. I have a great deal of curiosity about how the world in general works, which is keeping me going through the many years of grad school!

I also have a lot of other interests. I love bicycles, skiing, and sailing, although I don't do much of the latter anymore now that I live in Colorado. I have also played traditional Irish music on the fiddle and concertina since I was about 11 years old, and I occasionally teach and perform at folk music camps and festivals.

PHILOSOPHY

Making this up as I go along, and accepting suggestions. I try to enjoy life and help out a bit along the way.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am brand new to couchsurfing, in fact I haven't participated at all yet. I am hoping that it will open up new ways for me to get out on my bicycle, either alone or with my partner Becky on our tandem.

Music, Movies, and Books

Many books, fewer movies. I like both fiction and non-fiction, although I mostly read nonfiction these days. The most recent good fiction I read was the English Patient, the most recent nonfiction was Bill Bryson's One Summer.

Music:
Irish music, especially Micheal O'Raghallaigh, Brian Conway, Liz Carroll, John Doyle, and the Yanks. American and English folk music, especially Bruce Molsky, Joy Kills Sorrow, Crooked Still, Noel Sing We Clear and Kate Rusby. I was raised on this stuff, but other music has snuck in: Michael Jackson, the Beatles, the Decemberists...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The black canyon of the Gunnison, which is the most amazing US national park that no one has heard of.

Countries I’ve Visited

France, Germany, Ireland, Nicaragua

Countries I’ve Lived In

United States
