About Me

CURRENT MISSION

try to convince the World that cranberries do NOT grow on trees or bushes.

ABOUT ME

I'm a 3rd generation cranberry farmer who dropped out of grad school to spend the 1980's working in Alaska and traveling in North America and Europe, before eventually settling down on the Family Farm.
When the cranberries go dormant after harvest, I'm still called to go exploring.

PHILOSOPHY

Keep an open mind, and when in doubt, SMILE!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

As I learned the rules, a traveler is invoking the ancient code of hospitality, and if you accept it you're duty-bound to pay it back down the road. I've received a lot of hospitality in my time, and I repay the Hospitality Bank when I can.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Too many to tell. Mostly wonderful, and even the sketchy ones make great stories! [Note: When in Yorkshire, think twice before going round-drinking with 14 cavers....]

Interests

I've been sailing tall ships up and down the West Coast for about 15 years, primarily the brig Lady Washington and ketch Hawaiian Chieftain. www.historicalseaport.org
In the process I've dug fairly deeply into 18th century maritime and trade history.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've been onboard a squarerigger caught aback and knocked down in a storm. I've shooed reindeer ahead of me in the perpetual twilight as I hitchhiked across Lapland in winter. I've weathered a midnight thunderstorm on a bald mountaintop in the Alps. I've seen the desert burst into bloom after a 100 year rain. All defy words.
